This Friday is Juneteenth. What is Juneteenth?

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas. He informed the enslaved African Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. This momentous occasion has been celebrated as Juneteenth — a combination of June and 19 — for over 150 years. Juneteenth was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.

Sierra College Foundation & RYE
Last week, we had two speakers: Julian Wodz, a student who received support from the foundation, was unable to attend. Jennesa Daterma, the Development Director from the Sierra College Foundation, shared his story and how the support changed his life and others through the programs they offer. We also had a RYE (Rotary Youth Exchange) student presentation from Livia Immamura from Brazil. She shared how RYE and her time here have impacted her life, and she has found a second home.

Our big FUNdraiser for the year, Brewfest, was a major hit this last weekend. A big thank you to our committee members, dedicated club members, and the many volunteers who make this event possible.
