In 1933, Mrs. Roosevelt became the first, First Lady to hold her own press conference. In an attempt to afford equal time to women--who were traditionally barred from presidential press conferences--she allowed only female reporters to attend. In 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) refused to allow Marion Anderson, an African American singer, to perform in their auditorium. In protest, Mrs. Roosevelt resigned her membership in the DAR.

She became an advocate of the rights and needs of the poor, of minorities, and of the disadvantaged. The public was drawn in by the First Lady's exploits and adventures which she recounted in her daily syndicated column, "My Day". She began writing the column in 1935 and continued until her death in 1962.

Rotary Minute
Last week's meeting turned into a series of Rotary Minutes. A Rotary minute is an opportunity to share updates, enhance knowledge, inspire action, and share member stories at a club meeting.

Frank Udvarhely was presented with his first Paul Harris. Congratulations, Frank. Pictured below.

The Roseville club spoke about their upcoming fundraiser, Bites n Bevvies, on April 25th.

Our sergeant-at-arms gave a presentation on our violations via a points system. Not a leaderboard you want to be on.

A few words were shared in memory of Ken Yordy, a longtime Rotarian and member of our Club, who passed away recently. Ken will be remembered for his kindness, his wisdom, and his unwavering dedication to this community, service above self, and to each of us.

Or Speaker Karla Knight provided us a brief teaser of what she will be sharing when she returns to speak on April 8th. Karla Knight, of Blue Star Moms, a non-profit organization founded in 1942 to support mothers of children in the U.S. Armed Forces, will be sharing their mission when she returns.

Adopt a Creek Program, April 25th from 8:00 am – 11:00 am (or earlier, depending on how quickly we wrap things up)

We’ll focus our efforts within the Twin Oaks Park boundary, where a little Rotary TLC will go a long way. With Little League in full swing (pun fully intended), the park perimeter and parking areas could use some attention. Much of the trash that ends up in the open space actually starts here and gets blown there, so we’ll be stopping it at the source. See the event calendar for more details.

More information on these and other service projects to come. Keep an eye out for updates in the newsletters and our events calendar on the club site.
