Project Description
Background: The village chosen here for conducting project activities is the remotest, backward area of rural West Bengal, situated in the district of Hooghly. To begin with the village Ramnagar is situated under Arambagh block about 110 kilometers away from Kolkata metropolitan city. The rural community is dependent on agriculture, due to nature of land and its distribution, either a large portion of rural people become jobless maximum time of the year or they have to migrate to other places in search of job, to become migrant wagers . On the other hand there is wage discrimination in the case of female labour and backward community. The Public Distribution System is not properly functioning due to political interference and administrative bottlenecks and poor supervision & monitoring system. Consequently the community has been neglected and deprived of its Right to Food. Girl children are deprived of education, parental care. They are forced to marry at an early age and to do domestic work in other's houses. Child labour phenomenon is socially and culturally acceptable. This project has been started with a great enthusiasm in 2009 with the name GADADHAR PATHSHALA with some initial students of various classes and the exam results of the students are more inspiring. Most of the guardians are also very motivated. But in the present scenario we are facing acute short of fund for future running with increasing number of quality students. We are facing difficulties to hire quality teachers and to maintain student-teacher ratio i.e.10:1. Long Term and Short-term Objectives: • Work as a catalyst in bringing change in the lives of underprivileged and marginalized children by addressing their basic needs. • Main objective behind the project is to provide destitute children a decent and healthy life, simultaneously making them as responsible members of the society. In other words, they are nurtured for living lives as other normal children do. • Establish a non-formal education centre for providing quality education to the deprived / underprivileged children & address the nutritional & other health care needs through monthly health camps • To improve upon the child situation holistically through restoration of survival, development protection and participation rights. • To provide Remedial and Counseling support to school going children. This will be ensured through remedial counseling to the children and sensitization program for parents as a follow up of activities • To provide Life Skill Education on weekly basis on issues like personality development, confidence building, behavior & etiquette, health & hygiene, reproductive health, values, good habits, & social concerns, & other related issues • Enabling the community to mobilize their resources for a better socio-economic and political situation. Rotary E-Club of Canada One and The Rotary Club of Calcutta Metropolitan East are working on this project

Thank you and your group for your support in this youth literacy project.
It is great to the see the children at study time in their uniforms, at play and  knowing they have added teachers and attention they need as well as nutritious food. It will open up a new world for them.
