Most Improved Student /Achievement Beyond Obstacles

 

The program is about helping Seniors in High School who have had incredible life challenges and are still graduating from high school.  We are also looking for students that also have the potential of continuing their education.  These youth indeed have experiences and challenges that would keep most of us from reaching our goals and yet they continue to succeed.  The program includes Leadership Weekend, FAFSA/scholarship Forum, speaking at Rotary Club Luncheons, and scholarships.  We are developing a mentoring program currently.
 
Bill Boon:
I have been a member of Reno Rotary since I retired to Reno 9 years ago and have been involved and active the whole time including International Service Projects Committee, Mardi Gras Fundraiser, Community Service Projects, Board member, Open World program, Youth Service and other small roles.  Currently am District Youth Service Chair and President Nominee.  Have been active volunteering in many ways including SCORE and Eddy House.
My career was in the chemical industry where I did everything from applied research to leading a business to building new businesses based on new technology.  I worked for Goodyear Tire, Shell Oil, and Reliance Industries (largest private sector company in India).  During our 2 years in India, we worked with our pastor to support several small churches in the slums.
My education includes BS from William & Mary, PhD in chemistry from University of Massachusetts, and many business classes at different universities.
 
Judge Pearson:

Judge Scott Pearson was elected to the bench in the November 2010 general election. Judge Pearson currently serves as the Chief Judge of the Reno Justice Court overseeing the operation and administration of the six departments and employees. Judge Pearson also is the presiding judge of the Reno Justice Court Compliance Program, the fourth largest problem solving court in the State. The program helps misdemeanor defendants address their substance abuse and mental health issues. Judge Pearson also created the first Community Court in Nevada which provides a diversion from the traditional criminal justice system for first time offenders.

For several years now Judge Pearson has served as a judge in the area’s high school mock trial competition and the We the People constitutional program for both high schools and elementary schools. Judge Pearson also chairs the Reno South Rotary Most Improved Student scholarship committee which honors two students from each of the eighteen area high schools that have overcome the greatest obstacles to graduate. Several of these students are then selected to receive leadership training and scholarships to college.

In his free time Judge Pearson has coached youth sports teams in leagues for the Boys and Girls Club, Great Basin Youth Soccer, Sky Tavern, Sparks Recreation Flag Football, and the Reno Continental Little League where he sits as a board member. Judge Pearson has been married to Kristy Pearson, a local school teacher, since 1998 and has two boys he enjoys exploring the great state of Nevada with.
