TOM SPENCER AEMT AND EMS EDUCATOR FOR SMITH VALLEY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT
The Rotary Club of Smith Valley was honored to have a representative from our great Smith Valley Fire District. Tom Spencer is responsible for the training program for our fire district in the valley. Tom completed his Advanced Emergency Medical Technician certification and lucky for all of us, still handles emergency calls in our valley. Tom discussed our fire district in detail and gave us a great presentation. Among the facts he shared with us:
- There were 160 calls to the Fire District for support last year
- As of July 6th they have responded to 71 calls this year
- 70% of those calls were for Emergency Medical Technician support
- We have a total volunteer staff of 23 men and women with an average age of 52 years old
We in Smith Valley benefit from Tom's ability to train new EMT's here in the Valley. This ability is rare for a rural volunteer program and has added 5 new volunteers through this direct training. We benefit from a highly trained team with equipment that Tom feels is exceptional for a rural program.
