The month of April got off to a good start with a visit from Dr. Kevin Trutma, President of Feather River College and also a member of the Rotary Club of Quincy. FRC is celebrating 50 years of operation. Dr. Trutna presented a very interesting program about the college from its formation through what is happening there today. Kevin is shown in the photo presenting club president Kristen with a certificate of appreciation for the club’s support of FRC. Through our Endowment, we present a $1,000 scholarship to a PHS graduate who will be attending FRC each year. Thanks to Rachelle for helping arrange this very enjoyable and educational program.
The club was awarded a certificate of appreciation from Feather River College for our support for local students to attend FRC.
The District Club Leadership Assembly was held April 6th at the Nugget Casino in Sparks. District Governor Elect Randy VanTassel from the Rotary Club of Bishop convened the session. The purpose was to help Presidents Elect prepare their teams for a successful year beginning July 1st. Unfortunately, it was a pretty small turn out for the club with only Sam and Elizabeth accompanying Matt. However, it was a very inspirational and enjoyable morning and afternoon, and the three brought back some good thoughts and ideas to help make our awesome club even stronger. Matt will be scheduling a club committee and board retreat soon. So keep your calendars open!
Our lunch meeting on April 16th was loaded with interesting and useful information. We were joined by Portola City officials: Mayor Tom Cooley, Councilman Bill Powers, and Acting City Manager Leslie Chrysler. Tom provided us with a complete picture of the complicated issues facing our city. This included budgetary sources and issues, state unfunded mandates, our emergency evacuation plan, road conditions, and code enforcement issues. The up-coming "Gravel Grinder" bike race' scheduled for the weekend of June 2nd, was also a central topic. The council is hopeful that this event will bring the city more business and exposure. The club will evaluate this event for potential participation next year.
We will be gathering at the Log Cabin for our monthly social on April 24th at 6:00.
The April board meeting was cancelled due to numerous conflicts.
