This is our chance to hear from our incoming governor, and discuss ways to keep the club moving in spite of the difficulties we are facing with the Corona virus lock down.
As everyone knows our regular "in-person" meetings have been cancelled until further notice. However, that doesn't mean that the club has not been active. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Portola Rotarians have been actively participating in the response. We have made hand sanitizer (10 gallons with more on the way), sewn face masks, assisted with a food drive, and awarded scholarships to the winners of our speech and music contests since the area and district contests were cancelled.
The Rotary Foundation supplied $1,500 to help purchase supplies and make hand sanitizer for the community.
Making hand sanitizer was our first project. With this critical product almost impossible to buy, we ordered bulk ingredients and made our own. So far Klytia and her family, Irene, Tiana, Kim, and Sam have been the primary "chefs". So far over 10 gallons have been produced, bottled and distributed to the community. Supplies have been set up at Rico's Mexican restaurant, Leonard's and Les Schwab in Portola, and Gumba's and the Graeagle store in Graeagle.

The club is also building face masks for our community. This project involves cutting fabric, elastic, pinning parts together, ironing and sewing the masks. Rotary cutters are Renee, Elizabeth, Teri and Van. Kim, Elizabeth Nelson, and Toni Carl have been sewing their fingers off. Each mask takes about 30 minutes to make. They are made of two layers of anti-bacterial hypo-allergenic fabric. Kristen is in charge of distributing the masks in the community. So far we've delivered to EPHC, passed them out to people dropping off food at the food drive, and provided them to Leonard's for people needing masks. To supplement the mask supply, the club purchased bandanas for folks needing a face covering in a pinch.

We will be needing more people to cook hand sanitizer as soon as our supplies are replenished (hopefully sometime next week). Please call Sam and let him know if you want to help out.
Finally, next week we will be trying an "online Rotary Meeting" using the Zoom application. Please keep an eye out for information via email on how to attend!
