This Rotary project is to serve the grade school children of Churchill County, Nevada, by providing a safe, comfortable, and fun area for children to eat and play in. The Churchill County’s parks and recreation department provides an after-school program called CARE at the historic Cottage Schools. The CARE program serves about 110 children, and there’s a waiting list. The rural community has few and very limited after school options, and CARE serves all parents of the community and their children. There are children from all ranges from social and economic classes of the community- from elected and appointed leaders to convicted felons- that attend and participate in this program. The Cottage School was built in 1939 and in 2007 was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
We would like to build upon the heritage and tradition of the Cottage School with the much-needed services provided by the CARE program and create a shaded eat and play area for the children while they continue their educational journey. A cool and shaded area with seating for the children to continue their educational journey. A cool and shaded area with seating for the children to comfortably eat their meals and snacks would enhance the lives of the children.
