Moline Rotary was pleased to provide financial assistance to the Rotary Club of Negril, Jamaica, to help establish a student scholarship fund.
The contributions helped create funds to provide student school fees, uniforms, shoes, books, lunches and transportation to needy children in the Negril area.
The student scholarship fund has also focused on improving the school buildings, doubling the size of the vastly over-crowded West End Basic School, providing safety fencing for three other schools, building a bus shelter, starting a reading program and sponsoring youth to attend Camp.
“Moline Rotary funding gave us the inspiration and opportunity to start the program in the first place, and seeing the benefits that it brought, our club decided to invest further funds to get it to its present level,” said Ken Cooney, Negril Rotary president.
The student scholarship fund has grown from assisting 2 children at first to 10 children this past school year. “Undoubtedly without support some of these kids wouldn’t be able to attend school regularly and perhaps not at all,” Cooney said.
“We at the Negril Club are most grateful and hope other members from Moline Rotary can visit Jamaica so we can show you how the contributions have helped and you can also meet some of the children,” said Elaine Bradley, Negril Rotary past president.
