John Thompson, Abby Benevides, John, and Butch Trevor Abby Benevides from The Literacy Connection (TLC) and John, a young student in the program, were our guest speakers last Monday. TLC is 30+ years strong in continuing to provide their program due to grants from organizations like Moline Rotary and the Moline Rotary Foundation. The Literacy Connection (TLC) is a 1-on-1 tutoring program for first and second grade students from Washington Elementary School in Moline that are referred to TLC as being at-risk in literacy development by their teachers at Washington. It is an after school program that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school year. Volunteers find the program extremely rewarding as these young people are brought consistency and a strong role model to follow as well as help with their reading skills. Butch and his young TLC student, John TLC also conducts a summer reading program at the Moline Housing Authority’s Springbrook Courts community rooms for five Tuesdays and Thursdays after the end of the school year. The summer program is open to all children going into the first through fourth grades referred to TLC by their teachers. Special thanks to Rotary members Butch Trevor and John Thompson who have been long time tutors with TLC.
