Our last meeting we were fortunate to hear from Moline High School Principal Chris Moore on School District #40 Grown Your Own teacher program at MHS.  Our nation is facing an acute shortage of minority and male teachers. The Grow Your Own Teacher classes provided by Moline High School hope to identify, train, and nurture high school students interested in a teaching career. We have created a high school curricular experience designed to foster student interest, understanding, and an appreciation of the teaching profession. Our aim is to recruit minority teachers to the teaching profession and set them up with a future teaching in the Moline School District. High school students who choose to take these courses will receive a waiver of paraprofessional application and registration fees as well as application fees with our partner schools, Black Hawk College and Western Illinois University. In addition, they are guaranteed a student teacher/practicum placement in the district based upon availability and an interview after successful completion of their college program. Purpose Of The Grow Your Own Program To identify, train, and nurture high school students interested in a teaching career; To create a high school curricular experience designed to foster student interest, understanding, and appreciation of the teaching profession; To create a pipeline of Moline-Coal Valley graduates to be hired as teachers in the same district in which they attended upon college graduation;
GYO In Action: Career Access Plan - Students get to know different careers within the field of education. Then they make a plan including what colleges they want to look into, what scholarships might be good for them, and they also estimate their financial aid. Each year, students come back to the plan and make adjustments. Bulletin Board Project - Students create a bulletin board that promotes academic growth or social emotional health and display them around the building. Vision Boards - At the end of the year, students create vision boards that outline where they see themselves in the future. They also teach JA lessons in the winter. Click here to learn more!
