Presenter Wendy Bezotte, Royal Family Kids Last week we heard from Wendy Bezotte, Director of Quad Cities Royal Family Kids. Annually, 3.6 million cases of child abuse, neglect or abandonment are reported in America. Some of these children are right here in your community, maybe closer than you realize. But you can help to make a difference in their lives through Royal Family KIDS. Their mission is to transform the community by interrupting cycles of abuse, neglect, and abandonment of children in the foster care system. They do this through programs like their free, week-long summer camp and a 9-month mentoring club. These are designed for kids ages 6-12 from hard places who may not otherwise have the opportunity. The local chapter of Royal Family KIDS Chapter serves Rock Island, Mercer, and Scott Counties. Campers are royalty! During camp week, each camper can expect to be treated like a king or a queen. The children have many activity options, including frequent swimming, various sports, fishing, crafts, a royal tea party, and various evening activities, which include drama, singing, and getting to show their talents in the annual Spotlight Night. All are designed to be successful confidence building experiences. We provide a “family” environment with “Aunts & Uncles” and “Grandmas & Grandpas”. Their volunteers love serving at camp and span from age 16 all the way up to 70! All receive extensive training in working with children who have backgrounds of abuse and neglect and are background checked. Each camp counselor is assigned only one or two children, and additional staff ensure that each camper is always within eyesight of at least two adults. At Royal Family KIDS, we do our best to design a whole week of moments that matter. And in the case of the kids we serve, those self esteem building and genuine moments that they have at camp may be the only affirming moments that they have had in their lifetime. During each month, Rotarians can earn tickets that go into a jar. One ticket for every time you participate in a club service project, two tickets for each guest, five tickets if you sponsor a new member. During the last meeting of the month, we pull a name and give the card.
