Presenters Kathy Trone & Julie Gelaude, Rock Island Rotary, District 6420 Task Force Against Human Trafficking were on hand last Monday to update us all on the status of Human Trafficking in the world and in our own area. They spoke extensively on the current state of Human Trafficking, and in a nutshell it is getting worse every year. It is a $150 BILLION dollar business and it affects millions of people worldwide. Human Trafficking takes many forms. Child abduction, forced prostitution, forced labor, forced marriage, and many more. They spoke of some of the population at highest risk: come from an unstable, violent, or impoverished homelife; undocumented immigrants; runaways or involved in juvinile justice or child welfare system; drug addicts/alcoholics Signs of Human Trafficking in persons: - Appearing malnourished
- Showing signs of physical injuries and abuse
- Avoiding eye contact, social interaction, and authority figures/law enforcement
- Seeming to adhere to scripted or rehearsed responses in social interaction
- Lacking official identification documents
- Appearing destitute/lacking personal possessions
- Working excessively long hours
What to do if You Suspect Human Trafficking - Do not insert yourself into the situation. It could be dangerous to you and the person you may be trying to help!
- The time to know who to call in an emergency is before you find yourself in an emergency
- Familiarize yourself with local and international resources and organizations partnering to end trafficking in humans.

During each month, Rotarians can earn tickets that go into a jar. One ticket for every time you participate in a club service project, two tickets for each guest, five tickets if you sponsor a new member. During the last meeting of the month, we pull a name and give the card.
