Peter Teahan and John Ockenfels talk about their round-the-world flight to End Polio!
On May 5, 2023, Peter, and fellow pilot John Ockenfels, departed Cedar Rapids, IA piloting a single piston-engine airplane around the world. A feat only achieved by 700 pilots in aviation history. The 30,000 mile, 90-day flight, 37 landings in 19 countries, and involved 180 hours of flight time. Upon completion of this mission Teahen and Ockenfels joined a rare company of only 268 of the 700 pilots still living today.
The mission of Flight to End Polio is to raise funds and awareness around the globe to eradicate polio. The flight was in support of Rotary International and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. All funds raised by FTEP receive a 2-for-1 dollar match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. With the match in place, Flight To End Polio has raised more than $2 million to date. 100% of the funds raised go to the Rotary Foundation and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Teahen and Ockenfels paid 100% of the expenses of the trip.
