Rotary Outreach Program for Education (R.O.P.E.) Program Plan

The Goal of the R.O.P.E. Program is to provide as much information to Middle School and High School Students about Career Opportunities so that they may plan their education options accordingly.  In do this, the Salida Sunrise Rotary Club has planned several activities throughout the year.  The following are some of the planned programs:

JOB FAIR - Date to be held in late April or early May since much of April is consumed with testing.
1.  Businesses would like to lock employees down earlier, but many students do not think that far ahead.
2.  Areas of interest need to be finalized to create banners for the table groupings to pul students in. Please comment on your choices. A banner is attached from the Career Day so that you can see how these lay out. So they can be simple wording with a design or we can list options. We should limit the pods of tables to six due to the size of the gym.

Option 1:
        a. Tourism & Recreation
        b. Construction and Trades
        c. Finances and Government
        d. Technical & Digital
        e. Health and Wellness

Option 2:
        a. Professional, Scientific, Technical and Health Care
        b. Wholesale & Retail Trade, Education
        c. Arts, Entertainment & Recreation
        d. Accommodation & Food Services
        e. Manufacturing, Transportation & Warehousing
        f. Finance, Insurance, Government and Real Estate

3.Refreshments will be provided by Salida Sunrise Rotary and solicitations within the community
4.Employers wil be notified of the Job Fair date as soon as it is scheduled.  Businesses will be solicited by Wendell and Cory through County Economic Development Corporation.
5.Businesses or professionals who are interested in mentoring students via work and internships through the summer will be solicited.

CAREER FAIR - To be held from 10:00 - 2:00 pm on the same day as the College Fair (to be held every other year in 2016 as the one year).
1.  Students from the middle school will attend from 10-11:00 am and the high school students from 11am-2:00 pm. Students from area schools have been invited in the past, do you want to do this during the school day?
2.  Students will be greeted at the door by 5-10 Rotary Members (table to the left of the door) who will act as career mentors and guide them to areas of interest with introductions to get the ball rolling. We need to develop guidelines for them
3. There will be a scholarship/grant table in the gym for students to explore.
4. Refreshments will be provided by Salida Sunrise Rotary and area donations. Last year we had support from Safeway and can also talk to area restaurants.
5.  Test prep services should be showcased including Kahn, KAPLAN, Princeton Review and ACT/SAT prep sites. Kahn Academy is excellent because it's free and students can progress through the educational pods
6.  Tips on essay writing or editing at this point would be beneficial. Students are stressed by the end of November with college applications.
7.  We can supply "punch cards" to the teachers and then punch them at the door for the career and college components. One parent suggested doing this and then giving the student either an extra credit grade or a ten point increase on a quiz or test.
8.  We will take this information to both the morning and noon Rotary Clubs and solicit 10 mentors to work with students throughout the year as needed and will attempt to find volunteers in each of the general areas listed above.
9.  We'll track the number of students attending at all events.

SCHOLARSHIP NIGHT - To be held in February with guidance present for grants and both local and global scholarships.

CAREER CLUSTERS - Dates to be determined

1.  The presentation is straightforward with the professional giving a brief synopsis of their educational background, career track and job description. The students then ask questions and the dialog is off. We have a broad range of professionals on board.
2. Presentations should be scheduled at least two weeks in advance so that I can get a teaser sheet of information for Rob to post.
