San Antonio South Awards Scholarships and Welcomes New Members

On Tuesday, May 2, we honored five students with scholarships for volunteer work in their community.

Thank you District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran for speaking and encouraging the next generation to remain faithful to "Service Above Self".

As if the night wasn't exciting enough YOUR Rotary Club inducted six new members. We look forward to learning more about OUR new Rotary family members.

After The Rotary Club of San Antonio South participated in the citywide “Stuff the Bus” campaign, they asked the teachers of Graebner Elementary, located in SAISD, what their “wish list” would be.

Schools receive many different supplies, but often the teachers “wish list” is overlooked.

With the help of RBFCU and the Rotary Club of San Antonio South their list was fulfilled with over $450 in supplies.

Belia McDonald, Service Team Leader, and Rotarian Monica Caballero presented the supplies to Ms. Gallo’s First-Grade class. When we asked the children what having fun supplies for their class meant to them, they said it made learning fun.

We like to color, write and draw, was the consensus of the class.

The night was buzzing with five students from local high schools for the Rotary Club of San Antonio Souths Scholarship Banquet at Stinson Airport, May 10. Rotarians and guest gathered to celebrate this year’s recipients and to honor two Rotarians with the lifetime achievement award.

High school seniors from four southside schools were awarded monies to use toward college expenses. Harmony Fulwood and Zoe Zaiontz from East Central High School, Marissa Escamilla from Providence, Luke Sanchez from Somerset, and Francisco Vega from Sam Houston High School were this year's recipients.

Francisco Vega was also awarded the 2nd annual Mr. G. scholarship. Vega is pursuing his culinary arts degree at Drexel University. Mr. G was the owner of Mr. and Mrs. G’s Home Cooking Restaurant and longtime Rotarian. The scholarship was presented by his daughter Vicki.

Lifetime achievement awards were presented to Bob Murff and Dr. Dottie Williams. Murff joined the Rotary Club of San Antonio South in 1989, Williams joined in 1991. Both are three-time Paul Harris Fellows. For over 30 years they devoted their time, hard work and sacrificed much to make Rotary Club of San Antonio South what it is today.

The speaker for the night was Texas State Rep. John Lujan, House District 118. Lujan challenged the students and Rotarians to continue to do good in the world.

Money for the scholarships was raised through fundraising events throughout the year by the club, Night in Alamo Heights and a golf tournament were the primary fundraisers.

SA South Brought Santa to Pre-K for SA Campus

The Rotary Club of San Antonio South sponsored two families for Christmas 2021. Both families have children that attend the Pre-K for SA South Education Center.

The children were thrilled to see Santa. “Santa where are your reindeer?”, asked four-year old Earnest with a mischievous gleam in his eye. Santa replied, “I had to leave them up north to get ready for Christmas Eve. “But Santa I really wanted to pet them”, said Earnest with a disappointed smile.
