Your editor apologizes for only finding these notes on her desk yesterday, a week late, and being unable to read or remember some of the Happy Bucks and Fines notes.
MEETING TO ORDER: President Tim called the meeting to order. He then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Gary Thomsic gave the invocation.
VISITING ROTARIANS:
Laurie announced the following visitors, all from the Bellingham Club: Phil Gubbins, John Moles, Randy Hill and Fred Sexton.
GUESTS:
None were introduced.
BIRTHDAYS: Jack Curnow on 3/11.
ANNOUNCMENTS:
(1) There was a great turnout and much good fellowship at the Meridian High School bench building project Saturday.
(2) Career Fair: Pete Reuse is sick today, but he needs help getting more speakers in particular career areas. Spread sheet being circulated.
(3) Literacy Training is on Saturday March 21. Sharon and Marlene are going - the more the merrier!
(4) Club-in-a-club process: Eric Nelson could still use more suggestions on proposed members.
HAPPY BUCKS: Jerry L.: SeaBea Reunion
Brian F., San Diego with a baby (Happy??). Chuck T.: Drove to Denver for a wedding. Told a very bad joke about a snail and a turtle! Tim C. paid $7 to deliver a harangue. Bob Bowman a retaliation. Maureen thankful for the architects' group's contribution to the waterfront process; Tim V. for snow. Jim Bliss - L.C.'s win. Ray for celebrating his birthday at the "Bank of the Skagit Casino." Also for the great sprinkle donuts at the work party Saturday.
FINES:
Max Legg served as finemaster this week. Gary T. was fined for border guards in Blaine using pepper spray on travelers, Mel for taking the bus and depriving WTA of the fare. Jim Bliss for Griffey's return to Seattle.
BANNERS: None.
PROGRAM: The program was an update from the Auction committee on the plans for an auction being finalized. The date is May 8th, a Friday. It will be held at the Belleweather, and they have been very generous with the use of the room there. Brian explained that a plan has been formulated to fill at least 15 10-person tables. Every Rotarian should pair up with another Rotarian couple, and each couple should invite a couple friends. This makes eight. The beneficiaries of the auction, the Humane Society and Literacy Council will invite 15 additional couples to fill out the 15 tables. Of course anyone who wants a whole table for their company or their friends is welcome to do that instead.
Laurie talked about the major reasons for supporting the Humane Society, and noted that someone from there will speak for a full program on 3/26. She noted that abandoned animals are becoming more and more common, unfortunately, with the bad economy.
Greg Iwosaki talked about the Literacy Council, and the specific project they are proposing, which is to build a computer lab at Meridian that would be usable by students during the day, and Literacy students in the evenings. He gave additional statistics about the widespread literacy issues.
