Greeter: We were properly greeted by Jim Sands.
Called to Order: President Laurie called the meeting to order and led us in the pledge.
Invocation: Tim V.
Returning Rotarians: Jeanne returned from photographing the Moses Lake Rodeo.
Visiting Rotarians: George T. (Vancouver) and Jeanne M. (Mexico)
Guests: Stan’s wife of 69 years, Margaret, & the still loving and lovely wife of Tim V., Pati. WELCOME!
Birthdays/Anniversaries: Aug. 28th is both Sharon’s b-day and Maureen’s 9th Rotary Anniversary.
Announcements: After consulting with attorneys, President Laurie announced a Whatcom Rotary Foundation Board meeting following lunch. Ken reviewed time-line for the Duck Race on the 25th. We will be selling tickets at Golfun tomorrow, as well. EVERYONE should have turned in $ and Tix to Derek today. Tim V. continues with his Tim C. impression, (full mouth), to encourage spouses and kids to attend the race. Also, thanks to Rick S., there will be music. Ken encouraged people to report any problems they might see. We have security at this event and it should be fun for all.
Happy Bucks: Bill was happy that Marlene brought him a L.I. ferry schedule as he and Kris are taking family there for dinner. He also had sad bucks for missing Duck Race as they will be going to Lynden Rodeo. George T. had $ for Dr’s. test, which pronounced him healthy. Unfortunately, he was held up at the border due to “radioactive substances” on his person. We are glad he made it! Derek was happy for the Omak race and that he did not break his leg. (Dale announced that Derek came in 3rd overall!) Also, Derek got 80 pounds of fruit for $80! Max had a funny story about his 12 year old cat, Gretel, who suffered a raccoon bite, went blind from the meds, still hunts and brought back 3 sighted mice, (for a twist on the story!) Jim S. declared it was National Button day to explain all the badges he was sporting. Brian had confession $ that he took George’s picture and sent it to Homeland Security. Brian was also happy to see our program presenters and his friends, Doug and Susie. And to add to his happiness, Jody is home from Vegas where she we surmise, she met up with Prince Harry. Tim V. was happy to have Pati join him today. Maureen had happy $ to see Pati and Margaret, and Scooter $ for having to leave early. Scott was happy for a crabbing trip, (NOTE: Please acknowledge how mature Marlene is for not making that sentence read, “Scott is glad he got crabs”.) and Marlene was happy for the wine tasting at Vartanyan Vineyards. (In a bid for “Mother of the Year”, Marlene is at Rotary while her daughter, Allison is at home in labor.) Stan had Happy $ for Margaret’s accompaniment and sad $ that son, Donald was unable to join them. Also, Stan had $69 as on the 25t,h, he and Margaret will celebrate 69 years of marriage! Congratulations Stan and Margaret! Sharon was happy to have her friends, Doug and Susie here as well as convincing Greg to join her for the New Zealand trip in April. Dale was happy that his daughter was accepted at Varsity Soccer Camp. And President Laurie was $8 happy for the Mariner’s 8 in a row wins for the first time since 2007. (Tim C. went all negative on this!)
Fines: To a smattering of applause, Tim V. and Greg T. took on tag-team fine mastering. Anyone who did not give them a standing ovation was fined $1. Greg fined Norm for not being clear enough to Tim about fine master duties. Tim fined Norm for suggesting that Tim “stole ducks”. (This has led Tim to seek therapy.) Scott was fined because U.S. bank has been in litigation for over two years with Greg and Scott won’t just tell U.S. Bank, “Greg won.” Marlene was fined for losing control of her Duck herding team. (A natural outcome when you put a therapist in charge of lawyers!) Rollo was fined because Greg’s son is driving now and insurance agents are wrecking his life. Tim C. was fined for not participating in Golfun this year. Ken and Rocky were fined for the family discount they must get on their New Balance shoes. (But it was noted how kind they were to give Jim S. their hand-me-down shoes.) Max was fined for not responding to emails. Anyone who has flown and not ponied up for fuel costs. Maureen was fined as a PR person for falsely convincing Prince Harry that “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. (Jody’s name bandied about, again!) Dale was fine as his daughter has to decide if she plays for the U.S. or Canada in the next Olympics. Max was fined for not providing his cat with a white cane. Stan and Margaret were not fined, but congratulated on 69 years! Everyone who has less than 8,000 rubber ducks in their garage and Everyone who did not sell Duck tickets. Greg fined people who had not taken advantage of this great weather to be outdoors.

Program: The program today was Doug and Susie Landsem, the architects of The Pavilion at Blaine Community Center. They gave an interesting program beginning with the evolution of the Boys and Girls Club and Senior Center project. With their foresight, the whole Blaine community will profit from the Pavilion, not just the kids. The Pavilion project will cost an estimated $275,000 and so far, almost half of that has been raised. Construction is slated for a 2013 completion. There are many supporters including our own Mel Hollinger who started the financial movement with $25,000 and WCNR, who matched it. They are still reaching out to the community at large so for more information or to donate, contact the Whatcom Community Foundation or go to www.whatcomcf.org. Good program!
