Call to order:  President Sharon called the meeting to order and led us in the flag salute.

Invocation Rick Staeb provided the invocation and expressed gratitude for the great lunch we all were eating today.

Visiting Rotarians: none.

Guests of Rotarians: Cheryl Persse the CEO of Cascade DAFO attended as Julie's guest.  Cascade DAFO is located across the street from the Gateway Center (where we are now meeting) and manufactures pediatric orthotic braces…check it out at Cascadedafo.com.  Traci Bjorklund was Tim V's guest again today and is a regular and welcome visitor.

Returning Rotarians:  Rick Staeb is returning from several weeks (months) in Michigan. He will be returning to Michigan in September to retrieve Deb and his truck; then back here for the remainder of the year.

Announcements; we will be meeting at Cedars at noon 8/20/15 for lunch. Back to Gateway Center on 8/27.  

Board of directors meeting is 8/26 at 4:00 PM in Sharon's conference room; Zervas Architects, 209 Prospect St.

Duck Ticket sales at Barkley Haggen all week.  Check with Pati for schedule..but basically go anytime.   Turn tickets and money into Sharon but please only give her full books and money to match.

Hands on project and an opportunity to serve Ferndale Schools. Help is needed stuffing backpacks with school supplies. The backpacks are provided for low income students, by FSD and we can help get them ready for distribution on 8/18 9 AM to noon at Skyline Elementary School and 8/20 9 AM to noon at Cascadia Elementary schools.

Happy  Bucks:   Bill Grace is happy he is left handed, Brian Lott is happy for his job as sergeant at arms today and that all is going well with that task, Julie is happy for her guest Cheryl Persse, and Laurie is (of course) happy about the Mariners no hitter the previous evening. Jim Blaney was just happy and then Jim Sands had a long story with happy\sad bucks about his Lexus being totaled by a distracted driver that caused a four car rear-ending pile up that totaled at least three of the vehicles. It was his favorite car and he now has three days to find a new one. Rick Staeb is happy to be back from Michigan, sorry he has been miss-pronouncing Rollo's name on the radio for weeks and very happy about his personal best round of golf (76) recently played. His "Big Band" is playing Monday evening (8/17) at the Lynden Fair and again on 8/30 at Fairhaven Green from 2-4.  Stan was sad about Jon Donnelan's recent stroke and happy to report Jon seems to be recovering well.  Pati is happy about our speaker today,  Criag Mueller, Jake is happy about the Mariners no hitter and is confident the Mariners will make the playoffs, he is happy about our new venue and terrific food  (admitted he was skeptical at first) Marlene is happy about her grandson Grant's second birthday and her new fantasy football team  assembled from all the "bad actors" that are in the news, Rollo is happy for his cute little Duck call whistle and Tim Villhauer was $70 happy for his birthday, the new venue, the great food, the Seahawks, Mariners no hitter (enough already!) Rick being back to support him in his club secretary duties and the one year polio free announcement for Africa, Sharon is happy to see Rick back and for Brian as the new sergeant at arms!

Fine Master:  Marlene Sexton quickly assessed Tim V for some seriously strong cocktail that involved agave and extended the fine to Pati for her relationship to Tim, Brian was fined for being a party to the Lummi  Island HOA lawsuit (does anyone remember when Marlene's dad Bob Bowman was complaining about similar HOA lawsuits?)  which names her has "Jane Doe" Sexton, Jim Blaney was fined for his sensitive car alarm that went off as she walked by, anyone who has not donated blood in the past year was fined $1 and another $1 for not wearing your Rotary pin, or if you sold all of your Duck tickets, another $1 and Linda Quinn was fined for not starting school soon enough for Marlene's grandson who wants to go hang out with the "smart people", Traci was fined (Tim paid) for abandoning the Edward Jones office during the meeting time and Jake was fined for taking Sharon's soup, anyone without a boat was fined for still having money and Rollo took some flak about his unusual name and Greg Iwasaki was last one in today.

Banners:    The banners today represented Africa's announcement of one full year of being polio free and the WA DC banner was the first banner we received this year.

Program:  Craig Mueller COB project engineer for the Day Lighting of Padden Creek. The history of the creek is interesting. The creek was put underground in 1890 and runs through a tunnel, between 17^th and 22^nd street near Fairhaven Parkway. In 1890 the city was preparing to be the terminus for the Great Northern Railway and the road was needed to go over the creek. The terminus went to Seattle but the tunnel remains. The Day Lighting project will leave the tunnel in place as the outlet for the WWU storm water but the new creek bed will allow the creek to run freely in an open creek channel. The purpose of the project is to relieve the flood plain and flood way designation in the adjacent Happy Valley neighborhood; 87 homes are in the flood way or flood plain. Those homes are at risk of damage during floods of which there have been three in the past 70 years. The tunnel has also been a fish blockage so the Day Lighting operation will improve the fish habitat, wild life habitat and interurban trail improvements (new bridge). The project must be completed by 10/1/15. It is funded from a variety of grants (Department of ecology is largest) and storm water funds. The creek channel will be re-planted with native trees and is expected to be beautiful with the ability to absorb\handle the 100 year flood without spilling out into the neighborhood. The 87 homes will now be free of the flood plain designation and improves their ability to be bought and sold and insured.  The you tube video is a good summary of the project and worth the four minutes to watch. Drawing:   Jake Smith one the bouquet of dahlias from Pati's garden and Marlene\Rocky did not pick the ace of spades; the pot is now at $1,036 for 50%.  Parsons..you better be there on the 27^th and buy raffle tickets!
