Northwind April 21, 2016

President Sharon called the meeting to order and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Ken filled in for Jim Sands on the Invocation.

 

Pete Ruese was Greg’s guest.

 

Marlene was our only Returning Rotarian from a week of fun at Laguna Beach CA.

 

No Birthdays or Anniversaries.

 

Announcements:  Star Park Work Party on 6/4.

Youth Service Awards are set for May 26^th at Northwood Hall.  ICU has agreed to continue the support of the Scholarships.  See Greg about being a Table Captain the day of the event.

Duck Tickets are available for sale; begin thinking about events at which we can sell tickets, i.e. Haggen’s, Old Settler’s Picnic, etc.

Norm has proposed a RYLA applicant for this year’s camp.

Laurie gave an update on the Pardta Parditi project in India.  We were able to provide $15,000 for school uniforms, supplies and teacher education.  The Projects Committee also awarded dollars to The Warm Coats Project, the Early Learning Center and Pure Water for the World.

 

Happy Bucks:  Bill was happy about the rain today. Marlene had some sad buck for having to spend two days at the hospital with Mark but was happy that it wasn’t a heart attack.  Sharon was $5 happy about being done with the Blaine High School Restoration Project.  Laurie was $10 happy about being able to ride her horse for the first time since knee surgery.  Mr. Blaney was $20 happy about this 72 wedding anniversary to his wife Helen. Ken was $5 happy for general purposes.  Stan had a happy buck for his daughter’s first place finish in her division in a recent running race.

 

Fine Master:  Ken inflicted the usual financial pain to those who didn’t have their Rotary Pin on or if you hadn’t sold a duck ticket yet, you paid a $1. If you hadn’t been out enjoying the recent good weather on any of your fun toys, you paid.  Also if you haven’t brought in a new member this year or brought a guest, you paid.  Did you know the cover story from the Rotarian magazine, U2 member’s dad is a Rotarian. Tim and Pati were fined $3 for being gone.  Julie received the “Jake Smith” arrival award.

 

Banners:  Earth Day on April 22.

 

Program:  Your editor presented the program on membership.  We reviewed a list of potential new members who were in the Ferndale area including businesses that could walk to the meeting from their offices close to the conference center.  Individual members identified themselves if they knew the owners of these businesses and would be included in an Invitation Letter from President Sharon asking them to consider membership to Whatcom County North.  These members would then follow up with a phone call and invite the potential member to a future meeting.

Attending members were asked to bring 3 names of potential members to the meeting and those names were added to the list to be contacted by the club.  We also discussed the mechanics of Corporate Memberships.  For example, the City of Ferndale could be a Corporate Member and would have a maximum of three people who would attend meetings and participate with club activities.  They could come as one representative of the City or all three could attend if they wished.  More on Corporate Memberships is to be discussed at the April 28^th board meeting.

 

Drawing:  Eric won the door prize and Bill drew the Queen of Clubs for the drawing, therefore, the pot continues to grow.
