Meeting to Order:
President Scott Piper called the meeting to order.Your editor very sincerely apologizes for her late arrival and for missing the following information for this week; GUESTS AND VISITING ROTARIANS, BIRTHDAYS and RETURNING ROTARIANS. Jim McKellar was presented with a pin for 24 years of perfect attendance.
Announcements:
Please contact Julie Johansen to sign up for the Pete Kremen Fellowship Dinner (on June 4). Please also contact Julie J. to host a fellowship dinner at your home. Dinners cost $55 and proceeds go to the Rotary Foundation.
Kindly park in the banquet parking spaces at the Northwood Hall and not near the restaurant.
Jim McKellar announced the following (prepared by President Scott Piper);
All of you are or should be aware of the fund raising campaign we are now mounting to fund a Memorial to Dick Metcalf; a Past President, Past District Governor and a long-time Rotarian. Dick was very involved with youth activities both in the Boy Scouts and Boys and Girls Club. Our club has set a goal of $250,000 to fund a TeenCenter at the Ferndale Boys and Girls Club. As of this date, more than $80,000 has been raised; however, in order to meet our goals we ask that all members become involved in supporting the campaign. We now need names of individuals or businesses that could be contacted to support the campaign with a donation. On the section below, please identify potential prospects who might support this effort and then return this information to; Jim McKellar,4315 B Village Dr., Bellingham, WA 98226 or contact Jim at a WCN Rotary meeting. He is preparing our donor files. This is an important part of the fund raising effort.
On June 29th there will be a "changing of the guard"! Please attend this Installation Luncheon as we say a fond farewell to President Scott Piper and introduce our new board. It is a perfect opportunity to bring your spouse and other family members. There will be a group photo of our club history in the making (if you're shy, you can always hide in the back row or have some fun and gesticulate rabbit ears over someone's head).

Happy Bucks:
Bill Grace woke up on Sunday morning to three ambulances in his neighbors' driveway who had a serious problem with a blood clot. Bill was told that she had been given a 1% chance of survival, yet is now doing well and recovering in the hospital. Bill gave happy bucks for the local volunteer fire department and their timely response. Phil Bratt was $1 happy that Gary Schneider and Dave Adamson sat at his table today, as apparently all of his other rowdy friends were out of town. Dave Adamson is happy that his third child (on the way and due on September 15) is doing well. George Scott was happy to be returning from Daytona. Marlene Sexton was happy that her parents have only one dog and one cat, as she cares for them while her parents are away in California. She has diagnosed the Cat as insane, and Marlene, we'll be curious to hear more about the Dog next week (being a dog person, the editor must compliment Marlene as it is nice to have a therapist who sees through the usual "cat blames the dog for everything syndrome"). Mel Hollinger was happy to have his family members present; John, Fontene and Darlene for the program today, and doubly happy for Tony (who presented the program on the Adelante Foundation). Deb Wiggs was happy that she is starting to create revenue toward the Dick Metcalf Memorial through the sale of audio books. She is still accepting donations of new/used audio books to sell. Hillary Baumstarck was happy and impressed with our website. Brad Peterson was sad about needing reading glasses.
Finemaster:
Randy Carr actually went easy on us this week. He began by stating how much it pains him to present all of our transgressions in public (note that he did it anyway). Several IOU's are noted in the cash box. Pay now or double the amount next week. Randy fined David Engels for an incorrect date on the Pete Kremen Fellowship Dinner, which is NOT on the 14th of June, but it IS on the 4th of June. Everyone who drives a car with a V-8 was fined (for those in the "hybrid" generation it's not a vegetable cocktail). George Scott was fined a few for enjoying a nice winter in Daytona. Those who didn't know what Adelante means (forward progress) were fined. Bill Grace was fined for selling "stool" (honestly, Randy). Brad Peterson for hosting a pity party about his need for reading glasses and Julie Johansen was told she could pay the fine. Those who have not yet contributed in some way to the Dick Metcalf Memorial Fund were fined $1 (rather light sentence). Gary Tomsic was fined for anything related to fish/marine life in the Semiahmoo area.
Program:
Mel Hollinger proudly introduced today's program, Tony Stone, the executive director of Adelante Foundation, a memorial to Mel's late wife, Wilma Hollinger, as directed by Bruce Brabec.
Tony Stone, who was raised in the Honduras, went to Stanford and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. He has won many awards as a Rocket Scientist for McDonald Douglas, but decided to leave Aerospace in 1999 to found Adelante.
His program offers; financial services, business, health and social education to women in the Honduras. Our club had the privilege of watching an entertaining and informative video on what Adelante does for business minded women entrepreneurs in the Honduras through this micro lending program.
