NORTHWIND
MEETING TO ORDER: Due to the unexplained absence of President Laurie, President-Elect Norm performed the duties, very admirably, although he may be too organized for normal people.
Returnee Rick gave the invocation and led us in the Four Way Test of the Things we say, do and think.
As the winner of the duel, Dale served as Greeter.
GUESTS: Tim V.’s guests were his assistant, Tracy, and Eric who works with Tim.

RETURNING ROTARIANS: The aforementioned Rick, returning from Michigan, with a banner from the Alpena Club. Let the good times roll.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Board Meeting next Tuesday, 4:00 p.m., Metcalf Hodges, all welcome. Is there a Foundation board meeting preceding the board meeting?; Rotary Leadership Institute to be held in Mt. Vernon, September 29th. Remember, the club will pay the tuition. There will be a repeat November 17th in Surrey; Next Wednesday several members will be traveling to the Surrey-Fraser Club to hand off the Traveling Peace Arch thing; Fundraising meetings return, Monday morning at 7:00 a.m., Arlis’s Restaurant; The Wine-Tasting Seminar for all you oenophiles will happening in October at Sound Beverage – details to follow since this writer suffered a lapse of attention; The Foundation dinner will take place November 8th. This will be an evening meeting at the Northwood Hall. Bring your significant others. Do you know a worthy recipient of a Paul Harris Fellowship, either within or without the club? If so, pass your suggestion on to Ken, post-haste; Next week our guest speaker will be DG Sean Hogan. Please show up, bring guests, and dress to the nines if you wish; This is New Generations month, so think of someone to nominate for RYLA or YAIL (Youth Adventures in Leadership). Details available at the district website; October is Vocational Service month.
HAPPY BUCKS: Bill for Tim’s office staff; Marlene for her birthday and the birth of another grandson; Tim V. for a lame attempt at a joke – timing is everything; Rick for golf, fishing and MRI’s; Brian for Norm favoring Jody with crab gift-giving; our speakers and a (nonRotary) fund-raising event he will be attending; Julie for the very moving and enjoyable district Polio Plus extravaganza and musical held in Mt. Vernon, also attended by Rollo; Jeanne for her photographs of the/a rodeo getting her to the national finals (Sorry Jeanne – I did not get good notes on this, and wish I had since it is a wonderful professional accomplishment); Derek for something I think involved running but could nor record since he talked way too fast; Ray for he and his wife’s bad knees; and being one of nine finalists at the New Orleans sign show; Greg T. was happy that Brian provided the program due to Bill Elfo having to reschedule- I suspect there is more to this story than was apparent to the unknowing; Norm for the San Francisco Giants, instead of the Mariners.
FINEMASTER: Maureen (Mr. Hyde) presided, and again disclosed the darker side of her personality. Why did she seem so happy?: Not having yellow or orange for lunch; not giving happy bucks; not attending the district PP event; not buying a ticket for the drawing; not having yet made an EREY donation; Brian for whining about the crabs; Ray for sitting during Happy Bucks; May and Max for attending Bellingham Bay Tuesday (no fine); Rick for his banner (?); Rome for the credit card machine problem; wearing an aloha shirt; not having a birthday last Sunday or Monday (pushing the envelope here); Derek for his 15K run (so that’s it!); wearing shorts; something; something; Greg T.’s nonvisibility at the Duck Race (he was hiding out in the open sea with Scott).
PROGRAM: Brian introduced Mark McCampbell, and his cohort Karen Haggen. We were shown a video about the human side of cancer treatment. Mark then provided details of the PeacHealth Integrated Cancer Center now under construction and to open in December on the hospital campus.
This project is the fruition of twenty years of planning and effort. It is funded with 13 million dollars from the hospital organization and 10 million from the public. The local community has been very generous, having already donated in excess of 9 million dollars for the project.
This center will consolidate all oncology services, including the physicians, in the same location. It will provide a healing environment – soft music and a greeter; infusion suites; continuing support for cancer survivors; education; group support, and in general will allow cancer patients to remain in the community near their home and family.
The Center for Hope and Healing will have a nurse coordinator and incorporate a Patient Navigator Program to help guide patients through the entire process. There will be patient counselors, spiritual counselors and meditation facilities.
