Call to Order: President Sharon called the meeting to order and led us in the flag salute.
Invocation: Jake provided the invocation calling attention to our Foster child Adoption efforts.
Visiting Rotarians: Nancy Jordan (B’ham club) Bob Moles (B’ham Bay) Bill Kirby (Carson City and soon to be Assistant District Governor.)
Guests: Tim’s guests were John Kamar, Kim Adams, Nick Barard, and the brains behind his success, Tracy Bjorkland. Ken brought along his brother-in-law, Bob Wilson. Dale’s guests were Lydia Wilhelm from Sequim and former WCNR member, Adam Finfer. Laurie’s guests were Susie and Doug Landsem who are also the best landlords and Eric Morgan, the best business partner, and Ric, the best husband. Julie’s guest was former RYLA participant and her grandson, Dakota. Jake brought along former WCNR member, Lynn Seeley. Welcome All!
Birthdays and Anniversaries: No birthdays this week, but Rick Staeb celebrates 26 years in Rotary and Dale Holt celebrates 5 years.
Announcements: Sharon shared a donation from Great Clips for free haircuts for Veterans. Ken took the remaining cards to the American Legion to give them out. Sharon announced the board meetings have been changed. The November meeting will be held on November 18th and the December meeting will be December 16th. (Due to the Holidays.) Same place, Zervas, same time, 4:00. Construction of Star Park in Ferndale will take place from May 31 to June 5, 2016. WCNR is donating a tree house and we will need volunteers to help. Keep these dates in mind. Sharon shared thank you notes from students for scholarships. Sharon also pointed out that WCNR is still in top 10 in the district for attendance according to the Peace Arch Journal. The recent journal also contained a nice tribute to Mel Hollinger.
Happy Bucks: Bill started the ball rolling with $20 for donating his 20th gallon of blood. Rick was happy for his first visit to New Orleans. Our guest, Nancy, was $20 happy for our meeting location. Susie Lansom was $5 happy for the Blaine Pavilion ribbon cutting ceremony which will be Nov. 23rd at 4:00. Doug Landsem was $5 happy for being an empty nester, hoping the third time is the charm. Adam Finfer was happy to visit his old club. Dale was happy for Adam’s return and to Lydia for teaching him the right way (the first time) to do his job. The Lanson’s were happy to pay for lunch. Jake was $5 happy to be here. Laurie credited her happiness to Pati for helping her with the programs. Marlene was happy to have heard from Brian who is doing well in P.V. Mexico. She shared his regards. Tim gave a dollar for every Hawkeye loss which amounted to zero, but gave a dollar for each ranking spot, which netted the club $5. Pati was $10 happy that she took a job with Ferndale School District and is a kindergarten sub. She was also happy to have Jake Locker as our program. Bob Moles was happy to be going back to Honduras to check on the Bano project. Julie had thank you money for Norm giving Dakota time off from Brambleberry to hear Jake Locker speak. Jim S. was happy for the good crowd today. Ken was happy for the good speaker (Jake Locker) and for Veteran’s day. Rollo gave a shout-out and money for Julie as a Corporate Sponsor and last but not least, Linda paid off her IOUs.
Finemaster: Greg was the finemaster today and started off fining anyone without a Rotary pin. Linda was fined for being the last one in. Anyone that did NOT attend the Foundation Dinner was fined, (Rollo and Rick) and if you were wearing a tie or shorts, (Ken, Tim.) He then went to Rotary trivia which included questions about next year’s conference (Seoul, Korea, which has the most Starbucks coffee shops per capita.) He asked about the cover topic of the latest Rotary magazine, (Thank You) and shared a note from a little boy who was thankful for new shoes. (Bill was fined for cheating, as he brought in a copy of the magazine.) Laurie escaped fines for having lots of information about Jake Locker.
Banners: Stan did a great job with Armistice Day banners.
Program: Laurie introduced Jake Locker, our speaker today and included his impressive records. As most already know, Jake was an outstanding Ferndale athlete, played for the Huskies and went on to an NFL career, being drafted in the first round for the Tennessee Titans. (Laurie could not help herself saying, upon retirement, he had been replaced by a Duck!) Jake has returned to Ferndale with his wife, Lauren and two little kids, 3 year old daughter, Colbie and 1 and a half year old son, Cooper. Jake and Lauren will welcome a third child in February. In his presentation, Jake shared his journey and where he is now. The Lockers, along with another couple, have the Locker Room, a fitness gym in Ferndale. Jake and Lauren are also starting a barn removal and restoration business, so see him if you need reclaimed barn wood or a barn removed. In his “spare time”, Jake works in the ministry for FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes.) This group works with men to encourage them to step up as leaders in family and community. Jake allowed for Q/A which was very interesting and revealed that despite the fame and excitement of the game, Jake’s life is not defined by playing in the NFL. This was a great program and if you missed it, you missed one of the best presentations!
Drawing: Bill donated an American flag in the spirit of Veteran’s day and this was won by John Kamar. Ken’s brother-in-law, Bob missed the $112 door prize, but thanks to Greg and Jill, he walked away with a Starbucks card. The pot grows!
