Call to Order: President Rocky called the meeting to order and led us in the flag salute.
Invocation: Jim Blaney provided the invocation and a good one it was.
Birthdays and Anniversaries: Jim Blaney joined Rotary in 1980 which was 35 years ago!
Guests: Eric Mathews (Jim’s son-in-law) and Marge (Scott’s wife, but on loan to anyone who still needs to bring a guest.) Welcome all! .
Announcements: Bill G. shared a message from Pati who is going to Ohio, or maybe Iowa, Anyway, arrangements have been made to sell duck tickets at the Ferndale Haggens on May 30, July 18 and August 5. (11:00-5:00) She will bring sign-up sheets on the 21st. Ken admonished those who have no tickets to get them from Alina. Also, the YSA lunch will be next week at 12:00 at Northwood Hall. (Parsons, take note: There will NOT be an evening meeting at Bob’s, there will be a lunch meeting at Northwood Hall.) If you are a table captain, and you know who you are, be there at 11:45. For the record: Jake= Blaine, Tim= Nooksack, Linda= Ferndale, Laurie=Lynden High School, Ken= Mt. Baker, Jill=Windward, Rick=Lynden Christian, and Scott= Meridian. (At least that is how I think it goes!)
We got a couple of nice Thank You notes. One was from Ferndale Food Bank and the other from the Opportunity Council. Both for our contributions.
Ferndale School District is sponsoring an Outreach at the WECU community room on May 13. They will discuss how to serve children with medical, educational, housing needs, etc.
Rocky awarded Bill Grace with his Paul Harris “one and three” pin as well as sponsorship pins for Greg Iwaskai. If Bill and Greg actually want the pins, they will have to go to Rocky’s house. They are on the table.
Happy Bucks: Laurie was $5 happy because her granddaughter placed 1st in her quarter horse show. Rocky was happy? For Sylvia’s trip to California. Scott happy about “delayed maintenance” on something. Bill was $5 happy for the decent weather, the YSA program and an Elk’s Auction where his platters and shakers went for $250, which goes to scholarships. Alina paid off her “Mary Lou’s” and was happy for the Master Gardener Sale this weekend at Hovander. Ken was happy he got his vegetable garden planted and he was also happy that Sue is in S.F. for Mother’s Day. Jake was happy for his grandson’s AAU team which won 2 games in a row and now are 7 and 0 (11 year olds). Bill added on happy bucks because the Mariners can’t lose since they are not playing. Laurie looked like she may be plotting revenge. Finemaster: Ken began by fining Bill for trying to bribe him. Dale got the Jake Smith award for being last in. Anyone with a “Mary Lou [IOU] got an extra dollar added. There was a fine if you have never done a make-up at another club. $1 fine if you have never bought nachos for the meeting. Another fine if you have not paid the YSA assessment and another if you have not brought a guest. (Again, Marge rents out!) You were fined if you are not getting the Rotarian. Jake had questions and was fined. And $1 if you have not yet sold a duck ticket and $2 fine if you have not yet picked up your tickets.

Program: Laurie introduced our presenter, Dr. Cristina Smith from Peace Health Cardiology. Turns out Dr. Smith has a passion for talking about heart failure and what you can do about it. She gave very interesting statistics, some solutions and interventions and talked about the new advances in treatment. She also talked about the lifestyle changes heart failure creates. Very informative and FUNNY presentation. This was a great presentation and I was so engrossed, I cannot read my own notes! If you were there, you know what I mean. If you missed it, so sad, too bad!
Drawing: Marge won the door prize of a flashlight. Dale won the cookies, and Laurie did not win the jackpot. The pot grows!
