Northwind March 25, 2016

Call to Order:  President Sharon called the meeting to order, led us in the flag salute and Marlene provided an “emergency” invocation.

Guests: Rollo was accompanied by his newest office assistant, daughter, Morgan.  Welcome!

 

 

Birthdays and Anniversaries:  Julie celebrates on the 31^st by attending the Career Fair.

 

Announcements:  A reminder of the Career Fair on March 31^st.  Eric would be happy to have us show up early, (7:45 AM).  The location is Settlemyer Hall at BTC.  If you want to be more involved, look at your emails and email Eric back if you are going to attend.  Bill will be there and wants help cutting up Subway sandwiches.  (Bring knife and cutting board, Bill will supply the gloves.)  There will be lots of jobs to do from setting up to tearing down, so let’s have all hands on deck.  This is usually a fun event, the more the merrier!  April 9^th is the District Training Assembly formally known as the District Assembly.  We are all encouraged to go to B.C. for this event.  You can register on the 50/50 website.  April 23 is the Rotary Learning Training, formally known as Rotary Leadership Institute.  We need to register one week in advance, also on the District Website.  April 28-May 1  is the District Conference at Semiahmoo.  We need to make a good showing for this fun event.  Save the Dates!  June 4^th is “hands on” at  Star Park in Ferndale, (see emails) and be there from 12:30 to 5:00 unless you want to go in the morning,  In that case, sign up on the Ferndale City Website.  Also, you can join Windward school on Friday, if that works better. August 27^th is the Duck Race and this will be tied in with the Ferndale Street Fair.  The tickets are about to be printed and we will need to sell 150 tickets each, so make a list of people you will sell to.  (We will also be doing grocery stores and other group sales.)  Tickets will be $20 ea and one ticket equals 1 duck.  This fundraiser has the potential of raising $60,000 so GET ON BOARD!  Grand prize is $10,000, next prize is $2,500 and there will be five $500 winners!  Only adult names on tickets, do not sell to minors.  More info to follow and good ideas welcome!

 

Happy Bucks:  Ken was $3 “just happy”and $47 happy because his wife is still with him after 47 years of wedded bliss.  Bill was happy to have participated in sorting fliers for the Career Fair and to celebrate the 25^th anniversary of said fair.  He was also happy to hear that Nooksack and Lynden require the Career Fair for Senior classes.  Rollo was happy to have his daughter, Morgan home for a visit.  Jill was happy that Spring Break nears.  Tim was $35 happy for his anniversary and happy that the Northwind misprinted his anniversary as 25 years.   (He wondered if Pati divorced him 10 years ago and didn’t tell him.)  Pati was happy to have Nancy and the speakers.  Stan was happy on “General Principles.”  Julie did not have enough cash to commemorate her birthday, so wrote a check for $67.  Jake was $10 happy for husky women, (eventually explaining he meant Huskie Women’s Basketball.)  Laurie was $2 happy for the holiday tomorrow, (Good Friday?) and for the Oregon Ducks Basketball.  Tim was happy again, this time that Laurie does not need to have major surgery to get the day off.

 

 Finemaster:  Greg was short and sweet with the fines.  Anybody not wearing a pin was fined $1.  Jake was fined for being the last one in.  If you did not know the cover picture on the latest Rotary magazine, you were fined and Jill was fined for “cheating” for knowing the cover picture.  (Which was something about Sri Lanka.)  (Ed. note:  I get my Rotary magazine at my office and have not been able to check my mail.)  And last, Anybody that is watching NCAA basket-ball was fined $1.

 

Banners:  Stan did not have banners today, but had a theme.  The theme was “Vernal Equinox.”  The question is:  “What banners would you use to display vernal equinox?”  The Equinox was this week on the 20^th.  If anyone does come up with a banner display for this theme, Stan will pay a Happy Buck.  (Note:  Greg did not announce this, so this will show whether or not you read the Northwind.)

 

Program:  Pati introduced our speaker, Shasta Cano-Martin of the Lummi Indian Business Council.  Shasta also serves on the WWU Foundation Board as well as Lummi Cultural Arts and she is the Executive Director of the Cedar Project which was the program topic today.  The Cedar Project is a youth leadership program utilizing the “Peacemaking Circle Process.”  The Peacemaking Principles include promoting an inclusive community and building trust and relationships before arriving at issues and solutions.  There are Leadership Team meetings throughout the year and you can learn more by going on Facebook:  LummiPeacemakingCircle. The mission of the Cedar Project is: To create a Lummi Nation that lives in Peace Loving Harmony.  The Healing Circle is held at Northwest Indian College and anyone is welcome. Again, you can go to Facebook for updates and registration.  This was a good and informative program.
