MEETING TO ORDER: President Tim Villhauer called the meeting to order at 12:30 and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Gary Tomsic gave the invocation
VISITING ROTARIANS: George Tsakumis, Jeanne McGowan and Carol Brumet
GUESTS: Bob Bowman's guests:Granddaughter, Allison and her husband, Cash. Jerry Landcastle's guest was his wife, Sharon. Dick Donahue introduced Bob Raypoll and Ed Brown. Josh introduced Molly Simon and Carol Brumet. Randy Carr introduced Norm Viraget.
BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES: Jeanne McGowan on 6/6/09; Leah Macaleer, who is spending her birthday in Greece; Greg Thulin

ANNOUNCMENTS:
1. Scott Wallace reminded everyone about attendance. The JA day counts, the auction counts, committee meetings count, and online makeups count.
2. Officer and board installation will occur at the lunch meeting on July 16th.
3. Chuck Tull said that committee assignments for the upcoming year will generally be the same as last year.
4. Greg Iwasaki stated that the final project of the year will be on June 27th, Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Meridian HS Library to build tables for the Whatcom Literacy Council.
5. Tim Carpenter is calling a meeting of the Club's Foundation Committee after the noon meeting on June 18th.
6. Bill Grace has the roster draft about complete. Those needing to update pictures and information should see Bill as soon as possible.
7. President Tim said that the card draw will soon change. At each month end, the four weekly winners will draw for the cash.

INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER: Bob Raypoll was inducted into the Club today. Bob was Past President of the Club in 1984/1985. Upon retirement Bob and his wife returned to the area and he is coming back to the Club as an Honorary Member. Welcome Bob.
HAPPY BUCKS: The following people were happy:
Bob Raypoll was $100 happy to be back. President Tim was $2 happy for the good weather. Greg Thulin was $5 happy about his birthday and something about being able to get his boat started. Winton Smith enjoyed some time in Cox Bay on the west side of Vancouver Island where he say about 50 surfers. Phil Bratt was $20 happy to announce that Rick Staeb will be coming to Barron Communications as the new sales manager. The job sounded as like Rick will work a week and then take a week off. Great employee benefit package, Phil. Rick Staeb, of course, was $20 happy for the new job which he starts on June 29th. Dan Parsons was $10 happy about the UW Women's national softball championship. Bill Grace was happy about his visit to Kelso to celebrate his brother-in-laws life. He and Chris went by train and really enjoyed the ride. Jerry Landcastle was happy about the graduation of his GS Tyler Jacobson as well as a few more things so that Rich had to start pulling out his wallet as well. Gary Tomsic was $2 happy about a number of noteworthy championships attained by the Borderites. George Tsakumis was $50 happy about a new grandson soon to arrive to daughter Sandra down in Arizona. Congratulations George, your grandson will be very lucky to have you as a Grandfather. Rich Jacobson was happy that son Tyler exceeded a GPA of 3.8, but this will cost Rich in vacation costs for laying down the challenge that his son picked right up. Brian Finnegan went out boating and fishing on Mental Floss with Captain Randy Carr. Bob Bowman was a bit sad that his family didn't sit with him. Marlene was happy about her kids and future grandbaby being able to come to the lunch meeting. Dick Nolan was happy for the weather and being able to tour in his roadster. Randy Carr was happy about the boat/fishing trip and his friend Norm who he went to HS with. Tim Carpenter was $10 happy and concerned about Brian Finnegan's bold spot, happy to see Bob return to the Club, and expressive about Terry Borneman using the Bellingham Court Building to provide a forum to consider making Bellingham a safe haven for military deserters. Larry Pollett was happy for the UW Women's Softball team since he knows some of the players. Pete Ruese was happy that he won the pot last week and chipped in $50. Dick Donahue was happy about going to Ohio soon and his time spent on the JA program at Carl Cozier. Jeanne was happy. Dan Baker was happy about an upcoming trip to Palo Alto to see a family member graduate from Stanford and then go on into nuclear submarines.
FINEMASTER: Jack Curnow was today's finemaster. Laurie Lloyd paid $2 for circulating an old picture of a younger Jack Curnow. George got tagged for not including Jack as one of the beauties sitting at the table. (Bad start for Jack so far.) All those with long pants and shirts paid $1 due to the great weather. Julie Johansen paid for saying Jack's son is more likeable than Jack. Anyone at a table where the gender mix was not 50/50 paid. Bob Bowman paid since he was not sitting with his family. Ed Brown paid $5 since Jack missed him. Scott Wallace was tagged $5 for the Scott Wallace fine limit rule of $5. Randy Carr was cuffed for making his guest late and for a business ad. Although we rarely fine guests, Jeanne was fined for spending her birthday in Bellingham when Leah was off in Greece celebrating her birthday. Jack tagged Bob Raypoll to welcome him back as an Honorary Member. Rick Staeb got nicked for all the time off he is getting before and after he starts his new job. Husky fans paid $2 if not previously happy for the Women's national softball championship. George Tsakumis was fined for splitting up the Landcastles. Josh Wilund was asked to reimburse his guest, Carol Brumet, who paid $20 to make an announcement about the upcoming B&G's Club Auction. Tim paid $10 for his heartfelt expression.
BANNERS: Stan had two themes today. First, he wanted to celebrate the UW Women's Softball national championship. Second, he reminded us of D-Day which happened on June 6, 1944. Thanks for helping us think back on this day Stan.
PROGRAM: Dr. George Pinky Nelson is a professor at WWU teaching physics and astronomy. But he is better known as a NASA astronaut. He went into space in 1989 on the Discovery right after the loss of the space shuttle Challenger. He chaired Hubble Telescope projects and was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame down in Florida. He said the highlight of his mission was when he had to put on his 300 pound spacesuit and a 700 pound rocket unit and then disconnect the tether to make a 100 yard jaunt to fix a nearby satellite. He spoke of his feelings about being in space, his excitement about repairs being made to the Hubble Telescope, his love of teaching the next generation of teachers, and the need to continue exploring space. He said that his scariest moments on the shuttles was at the time of blastoff with 3.5 million tons of explosives going off underneath you accelerating the spacecraft to Mach 25 (17,500 mph) in just 8.5 minutes. The professional in him was on the job but the little kid in him was soaking in the exhilaration. He said the Hubble Telescope will likely be replaced in 5-10 years with one that is 3 times bigger. He believes that we will be back on the moon in 10 years, and then we'll head for Mars after that. A trip to Mars would take 9 months but the whole trip out and back would be around 2 years since the planets need to align correctly. In all, George was very excited about what he has done and is equally as excited about the future for exploration and for our young people. Great talk Dr. Nelson.
