MEETING TO ORDER: President Marlene called the meeting to order at 12:30. Sharon gave the invocation. (The complete poem is here, if anyone's interested: http://www.ellenbass.com/pray_for_peace)
GUESTS: Dan Parson's guest was Brian Page. Ray George brought his kids Christie and Collin.
VISITING ROTARIANS: From Peace Arch Club: Wolf Paech. from Vancouver B.C., George Tsakumis. From Bellingham Bay Club: Bob Moles, John Sleeth, Shannon Terrell and Assistant District Governor Orphalee Smith. From Bellingham Club, Bud Peth.
BIRTHDAYS: Ken Richardson tomorrow, 7-30. Ken can start thinking about retirement now!
ANNOUNCEMENTS: 1. GolfFUN, dinner is sold out, but golfing is not.
2. Addie Brown has submitted a letter of recommendation, she regrets that her work schedule makes it impossible to keep up her attendance but is still very supportive of Rotary and will help out when we need auction items.
3. Ray announced that the 4H Barnyard Buddies sent a Thank You for our support. Ray reminded everyone that the sale is Friday 8/20/10 at 1:00 pm,in the Henry Jensen Building at the Fairgrounds. and you should contact him if you are interested in purchasing any portion of a beef, hog, etc. Also he's looking for a few volunteers, and for some direction on whether our donation money should be spent "turning" an animal, or actually buying and/or donating some. Several club members are already taking advantage of this great opportunity for excellent quality meat. Contact Ray for more info.
4. Upcoming events: August 21, 2010 GolFUN (Contact Tim Carpenter) September 29, 2010 RI President Ray Klinginsmith speaking in Richmond, B.C. October 2, 2010 Rotary Leadership Institute in Mt. Vernon October 7, 2010, District Governor will be visiting our club.
HAPPY BUCKS: Happy folks today included Bill Grace, who recently saw Scott Piper, who is photographing banners for Stan. Ken is just happy to still be around. Although his family was in a car accident, Rocky was happy that no one was hurt. Maureen returned from a family get together in Michigan, and also was happy to have heard Rick Staeb's band playing at Boundary Bay over the weekend.
Laurie was happy, but also sad to have to leave before the program. Dan Baker was happy that Ray was finally done talking. Tony will be happy to collect any used cell phone donations. Julie was happy that Ken is a year older than her, for a little while anyway, and also that Bob did not get eaten by the bears. Bob gave some happy bucks because he's happy about our club partnering on the Copan project, and that we should have great participation. Dan Parsons was happy for a Parsons family reunion. George Tsakumis was happy for two weeks visiting his family in Portland.
John Sleeth was NOT happy about politics and/or politicians. Winton was happy that the abandoned car in front of his driveway was mysteriously damaged and had to be towed away. Scott Wallace was happy about cookies that Jerry Landcastle either provided or baked, and also for ten days out boating.
FINEMASTER: Maureen McCarthy
Of course Ray was fined for his lengthy announcement or short program. Also targeted were aloha shirts, shirts resembling collegiate flags, Chuck for calling Bob "Bud," Ken for cheating and reading the banner description. Maureen shared some ten year old Twinkies from a time capsule and fined anyone who might have such non-perishables around the house. In keeping with the food topic, anyone who did not have something green, red, or yellow on their plates was fined, and Rick Staeb was fined because HE didn't invite her to the show and her feelings were hurt.
Back to Rotary business - if you don't know what committee(s) you are on, pay up. If you are a small business owner, pay because there was quite a bit of bad press in the Herald today, especially if you are an acupuncturist. If you were asked to help with the Northwind, but turned down, pay a buck. If you know how to stay safe from a bear (Larry knew so he didn't have to pay).
BANNERS: Tony was too far away. Lex had a good chance but coulnd't come up with anything. The Long and the Short of it - the longest club names, and the shortest. With the longest hyphenated name (?) in between.
PROGRAM: Julie Johansen introduced her husband Bob Moles, who gave a talk complete with video about his experiences fly fishing in Alaska. The trip he shared was to Katmai Lodge in a remote area of the Kenai Peninsula. The Katmai National Park has the largest grizzly bears in the world, and many, many other wildlife species, including ptarmigan, foxes, and sand hill cranes.
They mostly fished for rainbow trout, but sometimes also caught sockeye salmon, because the trout are following the salmon as they spawn, and feeding on the eggs. Bob showed some Arctic char caught in the Allutian Islands, and slivers, or "hook noses" from the Cook Inlet area, but the bears were definitely the stars of the show.
DRAWING: Rome had the ticket, but drew the Queen of Hearts.
