MEETING TO ORDER: One-more-time-Tim called the meeting to order at 12:30.
INVOCATION: Was given by Gary Thomsic. Gary eloquently expressed the shock and sadness we are all feeling at the loss of our beloved Jim McKellar, as well as the joyful memories we will always have of his good spirits and commitment to Rotary. Services will be at the Moles Bayview Chapel, Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
VISITING ROTARIANS: Bob Moles and Brad Rader.
GUESTS: Many guests attended today, and I apologize in advance if I missed or misspelled any of them. Ken Richardson introduced Mary Green, Superintendent of Maintenance and Operations for Whatcom County Public works. Stan brought his lovely bride Margaret. Rich Jacobson introduced both his wife Robin and her friend Julieanne. Julie brought her granddaughters, Tony brought his wife Pat, and Jim Bliss brought his grandson Corbin. Tim Villhauer broght his wife Pati as well as his colleague Bill Nutson.
BIRTHDAYS: None noted.
RETURNING ROTARIANS: President Chuck has (finally) returned from England where he attended the RI convention and enjoyed a couple additional weeks of vacation. He should be all rested up and ready to rule now. Marlene has returned from a trip to San Diego and other points south. Tim Carpenter is not really returning from anywhere, but he's been away from Rotary for awhile and is now back. While he was away he attended his dad's wedding.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: (1). Still time to sign up to help build tables at Meridian High this Saturday from 9 to 2. (2). Two more golfers are still needed for Golffun on Friday, August 21. If no Rotarians are interested, Tim will find someone else to fill the spots.
INDUCTION: Stan Brunner gave us a few thoughts about wisdom and leadership. Finally-Past President Tim thanked the old board and then Stan inducted the new board. "Retiring" from the board is past-past president Greg Thulin. The new board consists of Executives Chuck Tull, President; Marlene Sexton, President-elect; Tony Cubellis, Secretary; Tim Villhauer, Past President, and Gary Thomsic, Treasurer; as well as continuing Board Members Paul Cooley, Dan Parsons, Randy Carr, Maureen McCarthy and Sharon Robinson.
BANNERS: There were some interesting-looking banners displayed on the wall but their meaning continues to escape me.
PROGRAM: Huge thanks to Dan Baker for the following report on our program. I'm sorry I missed it.
Life's No Dress Rehearsal
Presented by Deckhand Travis Lofland â€" Deckhand Fishing Vessel "FV Wizard" Owned and Captained by Keith Colburn.
Travis was raised in Lynden Washington and graduated from Lynden High School. After High School Travis sent some time in college and joined the military. After his military tour, Travis became a commercial fisherman and participated in many different fisheries for a verity of seafood products on the west coast including Washington and Alaska. Travis now lives in Hawaii
In 2002 Travis joined the crew of the FV Wizard fishing King and Opilio Crab. Opilio is also known as Snow, Green, Tanner and Spider Crab. During the season the boat is based out of Dutch Harbor Alaska near Unalaska in the Aleutian Island Chain. In 2006 Travis took time off to work on his home in Hawaii and then returned to the FV Wizard where he continues as a deckhand. Travis has been involved in many tapings of the show "Deadliest Catch" and has many stories about this experience. During the off season Travis uses his time to travel around the country doing charity events and telling about his experiences as part of the show productions and as the self proclaimed "DEADLIEST DECKHAND".
