MEETING TO ORDER: President Marlene called the meeting to order at 12:30. Tony Cubellis gave the invocation.
GUESTS: Dick Nolan's guest was Josh from Whidbey Island Bank. Tim Villhauer brought Tim Bennett. Jerry's guest was his son Scott, from Sacramento, here to celebrate his 30th class reunion. Jerry confirmed that he did in fact graduate.
VISITING ROTARIANS: Jerry Landcastle announced the visiting Rotarians: Michael Brazil from Bellingham Bay club, Jeanne McGee from Melaque, Mexico, and Jim Blaney from East Polk, Iowa. Our speaker and special guest, Assistant District Governor Dr. Lee Harmon.
President Marlene announced that Jim has moved to Whatcom County permanently, and plans to transfer his membership to our club.
BIRTHDAYS: None this week.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Tim Villhauer, chair of the International Projects Committee announced that the committee has recommended, and the board has approved, moving forward on partnering with the Bellingham Bay club on the Copan Banos (Bathrooms) project. The total project is estimated to cost about $40,000. Our club will contribute $5,000.00 and will assist the Bay club in putting on a fundraising luncheon on Sunday, October 3, 2010. Mark your calendars. Also, members will be encouraged to join in the hands-on work to be done in Honduras, on a trip at the end of January 2011.
2. President Marlene announced that several changes and new rules have been added by RI in the latest Report from the 2010 Council on Legislation. These include: Membership requirements now state that you must attend at least 50% of the meetings in any half-year at your own club. Leaves of absence may be granted by a club's Board for any reason they consider good and sufficient. Detailed explanations will not be required. Additional rules regarding the Rule of 85 will be discussed next week.
3. Ray George announced that flyers are on the tables for the Lynden Junior Livestock Show and Sale. The date is Friday, August 20. There are several ways to participate in supporting the kids - including buying or sharing in purchase of part or all of an animal. Let Ray know if you are interested.

SPECIAL EVENTS: New Member Jim Sands was presented by his life-long friend Ken Richardson, and inducted into the club by Bill Grace. Welcome Jim!
HAPPY BUCKS: Norm - 14 year anniversary and 5 yr. old son = $20.00? Brian - Jody agreed to marry him 16 yrs. ago, also baby Kaylee said her first swearword and she wasn't repeating Brian. Bill was happy for the new members Jim and Jon. Tyler was happy to have his dad visit from Arizona. Ken was happy that the new members are bringing down the clubs average age. Rome was fly fishing with his son in California. Jeanne camping in CA and a scholarship to a photography school.
Larry participated in the Ryan Stiles charity golf tournament and had a great time. Celebrities were very nice. Ray is back from California, where he learned that you can't take cell phones on water-rides in amusement parks. Also there was a very long story about Randy and Randy's dog getting in the wrong car. Shaggy dog story??
Pete Kremen was happy to have Jim Sands as a new member, and recalled Jim's ownership of Dirty Dan's. Tim V. was glad that his friend came up to visit from California to balance out half our club going down there. ADJ Lee was happy about our new members, and also paid a buck to say that he saw a bumper sticker: "Honk if you love Jesus. Text if you want to meet him."
Marlene was happy that her son-in-law's motorcycle crash was not serious, and that she's getting to know the EMT's on the island very well.

Generalized fines: Anyone who hasn't paid dues or meals yet, anyone who has played golf in the last two weeks, anyone sitting at the same table as last week
Banners: The collection and explanation of the banners this week was a true work of art. I'm not sure I can do it justice, but. In honor of the 115th Ferndale Old Settlers Picnic, the theme is Old Settlements. The oldest one we have is Sitka, which was the capitol of Russian America and named Novo Archangel'sk in 1772. The others were places "discovered" by James Cook in 1778. but then there is the Chinese oral tradtion that they may have reached our area as long ago as 291 BC, but there are no maps to verify this. Stan, you've outdone yourself!
PROGRAM:
Tim Carpenter introduced Assistant District Governor for area J., Dr. Lee Harmon. Dr. Harmon gave a very interesting and informative program about Polio and Rotary's efforts to eradicate this tragic disease from the face of the earth. We should be proud of the amazing effort that Rotary has made, and all make an extra effort to get to the finish line.
Dr. Harmon gave a history of how the disease has affected the world, it is especially a problem in areas where medical facilities are limited, and/or sanitation is poor. He explained the difference between a virus (polio) and a bacteria. He also explained that for every "sentinel" or visible case, there are 199 more people carrying the virus without knowing it, having mild or no obvious symptoms, but still spreading it.
He finished his program with the Three C's: Courage, Commitment and Cash. The world has invested $5.6 billion in this effort, and Rotary has provided $787 million of that. We still need Rotarians to step up with funds to match the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's challenge grant. We have already raised $135m or so, of the $200m goal.
