MEETING TO ORDER: Past President Tim the Villhauer called the meeting to order.
VISITING ROTARIANS: The faithful George Tsakumis was our only visitor.
GUESTS: Ken Richardson introduced Marlene's cousin, and Sharon Robinson introduced Bob Haggedorn.
BIRTHDAYS: (sorry, I missed these)
ANNOUNCMENTS:
(1) Tim announced that Phil Bratt has decided to resign from the club.
(2) Larry Pollett informed us about an important club visioning session that will be taking place on the evening of September17th. Please try to save this date.
(3) Greg Iwosaki announced that the table-building project for Meridian High School is on for July 25th.
(4) Bill Grace indicated that updates to the roster are on the tables. Please see him if you have any updates, corrections or current photos.
HAPPY BUCKS:
Tim V. is happy to have successfully completed his year of presidency. Bill G. is happy to have wonderful sunny weather. George M. is happy about a great crab catch. Marelene S. happy to have her cousin here, even if she didn't know he was coming. Pete R. is happy to be heading out on a 10-week (yes you read that right) boat trip. Hopefully it will last longer than the 2-day trip last year. Dick D. is happy for a new great-grandson, and for news of two new grandsons on the way. He is also happy for being able to see a Mets-Yankees game in NY and for 27 years of sobriety. George T. was happy for 44 years of marriage. Scott W. took is second first solo, with his grand-daughter. (ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢ââ'¬Å¡Ã'¬Ãâ?sÃ'¦ so it's not really First or Solo then, is it??) Rick S. had three weeks in Michigan, including 46 degree temps and snow in North Dakota. Wooo ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢ââ'¬Å¡Ã'¬" good times! He's also happy to be back and starting his new job. Doug T. brought up the fact that Dick D. didn't mention the wonderful police escort they recently had in Seattle. Dan Parsons is happy about his new home in Edge-less, they wrong side of the tracks in Edgemore, apparently.
FINES: Max Legg served as finemaster this week.
Dick D. fined for the police incident, Ken fined because he's no longer exempt and has lots of catching up to do. Jim B. for the Hawaiian shirt, Mel. For not mentioning that he had a new great-great-grandson. He says he can't keep track of them all anymore. Anyone who did not buy stock in Viva Pharmaceuticals was fined, since they have recently opened a large facility in Blaine. Marlene was fined for bad family communication. Anyone who doesn't Twitter was fined.
BANNERS:
The theme of the banners was in honor of Canada Day, but Stan couldn't resist adding a few banners with chickens, as he is so excited about the new ruling allowing the raising of chickens (hens only) in Blaine.
PROGRAM:
Randy Scott, the Regional Manager of Safety and Preparedness at St. Joseph's Hospital was the speaker. He spoke about how the recent H1N1 flu outbreak tested the systems currently in place for disaster response. In 2006 a task force was first created to plan for this and other types of emergencies. Since then disparate agencies throughout the community have put in place systems for resource use and communications. The H1N1 outbreak was the first time that the Unified Command was activated in in Whatcom County. Although the epidemic did not turn out to have serious consequences in the County it was a great real-world opportunity for the systems to be tested. Randy also talked about the Strategic National Stockpile of emergency supplies, and mentioned that the SNS being in the Southeast made our area the last to receive supplies.
During questions and answers Randy elaborated on the types of disasters they are planning for, and various challenges that they face. He mentioned that the overlap of the 2010 Olympics and the winter flu season could create serious issues, and that they are working to prepare for whatever might happen. We definitely feel better knowing that so many skilled people are working behind the scenes to handle any disaster that might strike.
