MEETING TO ORDER:  President Chuck Tull called the meeting to order at 12:30 and Mel Hollinger gave the invocation.

 

VISITING ROTARIANS:  

George Tsakamis, Hilary Baumstarck (former Rotarian) and Jeanne McGee in her last appearance before heading to Mexico

 

GUESTS: 

Tim Villhauer introduced his friend, Mark Stintoffer.

ACCOUNCEMENTS:

Ok, now I remembered I was doing the Northwind!

  • Tony Cubellis is collecting cell phones; see him for collection boxes to place in high traffic areas.  After collecting, bring to the next meeting.
  • Dick Donahue reminded us to sell our raffle tickets, each member has 50 tickets.
  • Paul Cooley is organizing a group study exchange sometime in May for 5 members of the Brazilian team.  He needs homes for four (He's doing one) during their 4-5 day visit.  The first meeting to discuss is January 16 in Burlington; Lex Ludtke will help.
  • Nominations for officers and board
    • Paul Cooley: President
    • Julie Johansen and Jack Curnow: treasurer
    • Also need nominations for directors whose terms are expiring
  • Lunch Financing:  Club currently pays $550/week for 50 lunches.  With fewer members, the quarterly charge must increase to $150/quarter.
    • Board Proposal:  move meetings to Tillicum House in Ferndale which has a lower 20 person minimum (currently 50).  Lunch is estimated to cost $13/person. Our club is unable to stay at the Northwood because the required lunch subsidy comes out of charitable funds.  Contact your Board members if you require further discussion.  This will come before the group for a final vote next week.

FINEMASTER: Maureen McCarthy was this week's fine master.

  • Dan Baker was fined for his cell phone going off
  • Everyone who did not stay up  past midnight on New Year's Eve paid
  • Pete Kremen paid for being on the Herald front page twice
  • Tyler Cook was fined for being the youngest member in club
  • Everyone paid who did not have veggies on their plate
  • Nancy Tieman was fined for not knowing the banners

 

BANNERS:  Banners brought in by members visiting other clubs during the years of 2007-2010

 

PROGRAM:   Gaye Godfrey, benefit auction specialist was introduced as the presenter.  She reviewed last year's yield and the top ten points to have a successful auction.

  • Services do not sell.  So if a donor is a service, find another way for them to donate.
  • Limit any silent auction items to the number of wallets in the room in order to create a competitive bidding environment
  • Make sure you donate first before asking others-starting with families, neighbors, businesses you know and work with.  Ask for the moon.  Always know what you will ask for and have a plan for another ask if they turn you down.
  • Fill out the forms completely
  • Art is hard to sell-smaller pieces sell better

 

Suggested auction items that receive the most bids:

  • Unique experiences
  • Memorabilia (audience specific)
  • Very practical items
  • Trendy Items
  • Local trips/mini vacations

 

Main points to remember:

  • Invite bidders, not eaters
  • Match items to bidders
  • Complete your work early
  • Treat guests with importance
