MEETING TO ORDER:  President Tim Villhauer called the meeting to order at 12:30 and Rick Staeb gave the invocation.

 

VISITING ROTARIANS:

BIRTHDAYS: 

Tyler Cook on Feb 27, Rome Sarwas on Feb 28, Gary Snyder on March 1, Ray George on March 3 and Merwyn Murk on March 4.

 

RETURNING ROTARIANS: none

 

ACCOUNCEMENTS:

  • Sign up to build picnic tables for Meridian HS.  15 volunteers are needed on February 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • March 21, 8:30-4:00, Hampton Inn:  Literacy Training.club will pay fees
  • Upcoming Career Fair --56 presenters are needed.  Sign up by April 2. 
  • Auction on May 8 at the Bellwether.
  • Antique Car show on May 24 at Boulevard Park 10-4
  • Tim Villhauer read the results of the location poll:  26% of members want to go north and 74% want to stay at Northwood Hall.  If the location was moved North-57% would continue with our club in the new location and 43% said they would quit.  Therefore our meetings will continue at Northwood Hall.
  • Best wishes, thoughts and prayers to Brad Peterson who is doing well after another bone marrow test and Roger Lennert suffering from Bell's palsy.

  HAPPY BUCKS: 

  • Tim Carpenter-first time since November 30 he's had two full nights of sleep following 2 back surgeries
  • Bill Grace-his brother-in-law with ALS is doing well and ahppy about the picnic table work party on Saturday
  • Phil Bratt-had a great Palm Desert golf trip
  • Ray George-arrived at the meeting before his guest.
  • Scott Wallace-was able to get through snow drifts without his tractor
  • Leah Macaleer-Willa's first birthday on Saturday and thanks to Tyler and Haggen for recent help with events.
  • George Myiow-drove down his hill today without any problems and thanks to the people doing picnic tables on Saturday
  • Larry Pollett-great Tim's feeling better and will be getting on his bike soon   

FINEMASTER: Scott Wallace was this week's fine master.

  • Jack Curnow was fined off the bat as reminder of the Scott Wallace rule
  • $2 for anyone wearing a tie
  • $1per cookie for all those taking more than 1
  • Huskies supporters because of UW students poaching WWU computers and for poor basketball ranking
  • Tyler Cook paid because Haggen received the Reader's choice award
  • Sports fans with team in the playoffs paid $1
  • Anyone living in Bellingham paid to help with the budget shortfall
  • Gary Tomsic paid because of Blaine's receipt of federal stimulus funds
  • Skiers (Larry Pollett only) paid for new snow
  • Waterfront home owners paid because they are happy they've already built or remodeled since new rules will prevent them from doing it again
  • Leah Macaleer paid to prevent Scott telling a story
  • Everyone but Tim Villhauer paid for not getting the banners

PROGRAM:  

The speaker this week was our very own Eric Nelson (Club in Club).  He began his presentation by sharing the organization's membership goals:

  1. 10-20% growth in club membership in 2009
  2. Make club membership everyone's responsibility
  3. Induct all new members as a group

  Eric then reviewed the process and timeline to increase members over the next 4-5 months by pre-approving prospects, then inviting them to join.  The process is to create list of possible members to go to the Board, circulate that list to club members for comment, and then back to Board for approval and the final list to club members in March.  Following the completion of the list of pre-qualified potential new members:

 

  1. A letter will be distributed to each candidate inviting them to join.
  2. This will be followed by a personal call to invite them to an event with a Rotary speaker to learn more about the club.  This will likely occur in April.
  3. Next is to get a commitment to join.
  4. Finally, all new members will be inducted together in another event (May or June) with a formal ceremony.  This will allow all the new members to move through their first year together in a cohort group

  Eric challenged the members present to think about community leaders who might be good candidates for membership and to bring forward 3-4 names with contact information.  Potential members should be able to attend meetings regularly and be involved in club activities.  Members present at today's meeting filled out forms and Eric will email the form to all club members so they can be submitted outside of the meeting.  He would like to have a collated list to share with the Board next Thursday.
