PROGRAM: Jim Sands introduced today's speaker, Ogie Shaw. Ogie has spent the last 36 years as a health and fitness consulting professional. His time with us today covered some statistics about the health of our young people, provided reasons why most of us avoid health related activities and gave us some encouragement and strategies about restarting our individual efforts to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Historically, 58% of America's youth fail to achieve minimum levels of acceptable fitness. This stat hasn't improved in many years and the trend seems to be going in the wrong direction. Other countries tend to do much better in this category. Ogie stated that the best solution to help our youth is to model better lifestyle changes as adults providing good examples to our children. Ogie also stressed that exercise is the best medicine available, yet it is the most under-prescribed by doctors. The #1 reason people avoid exercising is time - not enough of it. It really comes down to a lack of motivation according to Ogie. The best time to exercise is in the morning. Adequate stretching should be included in a well rounded exercise regimen. Ogie further stated that diet fads only wind up making us fat. It slows down our metabolism and increases our bodies' craving for nutrients. He offered up an exercise regimen that includes the use of an Isorobic Exerciser. He also recommended a book entitled "Nutripoints," which classifies and scores foods according to their nutrient usefulness. Ogie encouraged all of us to model fitness for our youth, exercise more, eat for nutrition, and stay committed.
