February 10, 2011

 

MEETING TO ORDER:  President Marlene Sexton called the meeting to order at 12:30 with Winton Smith giving the invocation.

 

GUESTS:  JulieJohanson introduced her guests, mark and Erin Schlicting, Ray George brought Rollo Van Slyke, and Marlene Sexton introduced her mom Audrey and hubby Mark.

 

VISITING ROTARIANS:

RETURNING ROTARIANS:

BIRTHDAYS: No one willing to admit being a year older

 

ACCOUNCEMENTS:

  • Bowling Event will be held on Monday, February 28 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Park Bowl on Meridian; dress is casual and food will be available.
  • Bring donations of wine & beer for the planned auction on March 11
  • Reminder for upcoming Valentine's Dance on February 12 @ 7:00 p.m. at the Dakota Creek Church and the cost is $20/couple.  Dance lessons will be available from 5:30-7:30 pm.
  • Foundation Board meeting is scheduled for February 16 at 5:30 pm.
  • FAA annual breakfast will be held February 25 from 6-7:30 a.m. at Ferndale High School.  We are invited as a thank you for our support.
  • A work party is planned for February 26 at 9:00 a.m. at the Therapeutic Riding Center
  • There will be a Literacy Seminar on February 26 at the Hampton Inn.
  • A "fun" raiser wine tasting event is confirmed for February 18 at 5:30 pm at Sound Beverage.

 

HAPPY BUCKS:

 

  • Bill Grace-announced he recently received results of a PSA of "0" 4 years post-cancer treatment.
  • Winton Smith-shared that he just got a new Doberman dog.
  • Randy Carr-shared that he participated in a productive fishing derby but didn't catch anything big enough to place.
  • Maureen McCarthy-scooter bucks and happy for bowling.
  • Laurie Lloyd-has just returned from a trip to Idaho where they celebrated her father-in-law's 86th birthday.
  • Tim Villhauer-happy to announce he crushed Dan Parsons in the restaurant certificate race for the auction and also presented the club with a $1000+ donation on behalf of another group he belongs to.
  • Paul Cooley-was happy he made it all the way to the meeting with his beer donation
  • Ken Richardson is having fun with Facebook but may be "de-friended" if he does watch out
  • Marlene was happy to watch Bob's Honduras presentation . . .so she can really see what happened while she was there (Margarita ville J 0

 

 

FINEMASTER:  Tyler was so entertaining in this portion of our meeting that I paid more attention to laughing than taking notes.  So here is a shortened version of the fines paid.

  • Everyone was charged the following regarding Valentine's presents:
    • $1 if you have not planned/purchased a gift
    • $2 if you have already purchased your gift
    • $3 if you don't even give one
  • Maureen paid for coining the phrase "Scooter bucks"
  • Ray and Julie paid for arriving before their guests
  • Anyone who could not figure out Tim's sign-up sheet paid, like all of us??

 

 

BANNERS:  Hearts and flowers for Valentine's Day.

 

 

PROGRAM:   Bob Moles updated the group on the Bellingham clubs' Honduras trip to Copan to create bathrooms for the school.  Copan is in a very remote area of northwestern Honduras where members of Bellingham Bay Rotary, Mike Hammes from Ram Construction and our own Julie, Sharon, and Marlene traveled to help with this project.  Rotary Club of Copan also pitched in.

 

The project was construction of a large building adjacent to the school with space for male, female and teacher facilities including fixtures and a water storage system.  Club members were treated with much gratitude as they painted the new building and installed the new fixtures.  In addition to working, our travelers also enjoyed site seeing at local landmarks and businesses including Mayan ruins and a coffee farm.
