Foundation Dinner (December 4, 2014)

The Ferndale High School Music Ensemble entertained us with wonderful holiday music as we socialized.

President Rocky called the meeting to order and led us in the flag salute.

Invocation:  Gary T. inspired us with the “thought of the day.”

Guests:  Dale introduced his wife Layne and daughter, Delayne.  He also introduced his guest, Debra Dempsey. 

Dick Donahue knew all the names as he introduced Mel’s 39 extended family members (including Fontene,)  Jake introduced his wife, Gayle.   Stan was accompanied by his wife, Margaret and daughter, (and baker extraordinaire), Jakie.  Greg I.”s guest was his wife, Jill. Rollo introduced his wife, Rebecca.  Laurie’s husband Rick was her guest, as was Capt. Wendy Lawrence.  Marlene was accompanied by most of her family including, husband, Mark, daughter, Allison, daughter, Audra and son-in-law, Mike.  Rocky brought his daughter, Sylsie and Tim was accompanied by his loving and lovely wife, Pati. Ken introduced his wife, Sue and Sharon was with husband, Greg.  Bill introduced his guest, Father Joe. 

Induction:  Pati Villhauer is a welcome new member of the club! 

Paul Harris Awards:  Ken explained the ideals of Rotary (Service Above Self) and began with Rotary’s highest honor, the Paul Harris Awards.  Mel Hollinger’s extended family of 39 set the record for most given at one time.  Mel is a member of the Arch Klumpf Society, having given $250,000 to Rotary International.  Mel has awarded 65 Paul Harris Awards and has room to award 73 more.  (Mel was unable to come to the Foundation Dinner as he is down with a cold and we all wish him a speedy recovery!)  Dick Donahue was able to award 39 certificates to family members including all kinds of cute little kids!  Congrats to the Hollinger Family.

Bill Grace presented a Paul Harris Award to Fr. Jonathan of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in honor of all the community (and personal) service Fr. Jon has done.  Bill stated that Fr. Jon offers ongoing comfort and support, not only to Bill’s family during Kris’ final illness, but to countless others.  (Fr. Jon gave a moving thank-you.)

Laurie Lloyd awarded a Paul Harris Award to Capt. Deb Dempsey  (Among many other firsts, Capt. Dempsey was the first woman Master Mariner.) 

And last, but certainly not least, Dale awarded a P.H. award to, former NASA astronaut., and helicopter pilot,  US Navy Captain Wendy Lawrence .   

Institution Honors went to Industrial Credit Union for their sponsorship of the Duck Race, their part in the Park Clean-up, and Feed the Need, among other community events.  They were awarded a Foundation Appreciation Certificate and we all feel fortunate to being able to partner with them. 

Ken then gave PH recognition to Sharon who now has 2 PH awards and Jake who had 1 plus 6 (whether he knows it or not.)

We thank Rick for documenting the evening festivities with his trusty camera, and, with profound thanks to all who participated and attended, Rocky adjourned the meeting in time for the Sexton clan to catch the 8:10 ferry home.    Edited by:  Marlene Sexton
