Northwind August 9th
Greeter: Some guy that looked a lot like Tyler, only with the 5th best beard ever!
Call to Order: President Laurie called the meeting to order and led us in the flag salute.
Invocation: Tim Carpenter
Returning Rotarians: Tyler (Business obligations) Scott (fun on the water) & Ray (property).
Visiting Rotarians: George (Vancouver), Bill Kirby (Carson City), Jeanne (Mexico) and Ray.
Guests: Laurie’s guest, Hilary Baumstarck who has moved back to B’ham!
Birthdays: No Birthdays, but on the 14th, Tyler celebrates 4 years as a Rotarian. Congrats!
Announcements: Ken reminded us of the Duck Race on the 25th. There will be a “test run” today at 5:00 at Maritime Heritage Park. See your team captain for assignments and let Ken or team captain know if you will be unable to fulfill your duties. Tim V. announced that Rocky has arranged for ticket sales at the Blaine Cost Cutter and watch emails for other fellowship/sales events. Tim is still accepting the donation of a duck hauling vehicle, which Ray believes he can provide. Tim C. handed out forms for Every Rotarian Every Year. Make sure to make your donation either on line (TRF at Rotary.org/contributions) or give a check to Tim C. or Julie. Goal is to have a club average of $100, but any amount is accepted. Making a monthly or quarterly payment can be painless.
Happy Bucks: Brian was happy his wife and daughter are returning after 8 days in the Boston heat. Tyler was happy to be back. Scott gave $ because Bill G. will go to a Duck Hunter meeting tonight and for nice weather and fishing. Ray was $5 happy for a Salmon Derby that Glorene won. (It was noted that Ray can give a longer speech than Tim C.) Bill G. was happy to have his Model A @ Haggen’s last weekend as it helped him sell Duck Tickets. He was also happy for a boat ride with friends to Lake Union. George was happy his 2 weeks of bachelorhood are over as his wife has returned. Sharon was just happy that she was able to stay out of trouble over the weekend. Jim S. was happy that we are happy and he did not have a long speech. Tim C. was happy to see Hilary, Bill Kirby, Gary S. and Tyler. Tim V. was $60 happy for his birthday (and the left over $ went for selling duck tickets at Haggen’s) Maureen was happy to see Scott, Tyler, Gary S. and Hilary and for a backpacking trip tomorrow. Laurie was happy to remind people about the Scooter buttons.
Finemaster: Greg T. was to be finemaster, but he handed it off to Norm who did not show up. Therefore, Tim V. and Ken had to fight over the privileges. Tim followed Norm’s orders and fined the following: Mel, (in absentia), for the Peace Arch Award. Norm would like to go to Canada and see if he can get Mel in trouble for smuggling drugs. Stan for continuing banner duty. Rollo for telling his daughter to steal crab from Norm while babysitting, thereby violating all that is holy about Rotary. Maureen for going down the Maureen/Marlene/Maurlene path again. Jake for violating the attorney code of ethics by admitting to a mistake. Under his own power Tim V. fined Brian for trying to sneak out and for not making it clear about his wife and daughter’s return. Jake for already having his money out in anticipation of a fine, anyone who has not sold duck tickets and anyone who did not go to Haggen’s last weekend. Then Ken took over fining Norm (IOU) for not showing up. He also fined Ray for impersonating a Haggen’s employee and all the women were fined for evenly distributing themselves at each table. Anyone who had not given $ to EREY were also fined. Tim then fined anyone who did not sit at a table with someone with their same name, such as Tim and Tim. Ray was not fined, but thanked for providing the duck banner and Hilary was fined if he does not come back to the club. (Guess he will get a refund when he does!) Not be outdone, Ken fined Tim V. for now having the 6th best beard since Tyler is now in the running.)
Banners: Tim C guessed the banner to be Hiroshima, when in fact it represented the bombing at Nagasaki, which most likely saved Stan’s life.
Program: Our own Gary T. did an excellent program on Membership: Retention and Growth. He discussed how to increase and retain members and the importance of moving in a different direction. We need to address: (1) Recruitment (2) Orientation (3) Integration and (4) Sustainability. The idea is to not find members BUT to give people the Opportunity to find Rotary. As a club we need to model the behavior we are looking for. (i.e. Fellowship, Enthusiasm and the Pride of being a citizen of the world. Wearing our pins is an excellent way to show the honor it is to belong to Rotary. Great program, Gary!
Drawing: Bill Kirby (President of his club in Carson City) won the jackpot and very generously donated $100 of it back to EREY. Thank you, Bill!
