Birthdays. Tim V on August 7. Susie of Northwood Hall celebrated a birthday last week.

Happy Bucks. Paul was happy for painting the shed. Josh was happy to be sitting next to Paul. George was happy to be invited, by a Senator, to attend a BBQ with the Prime Minister of Canada! Bill was happy for driving his Model A to club, and for sporting his newly sized wedding ring. Chuck was thankful to Rick for helping with Northwind distribution, and happy for a walk/hike in good weather. Marlene was happy for a recent beer festival in Portland. Jim Sands was happy for the weather. Rocky was happy for a golf tournament with his wife and for her hitting the longest drive. Dan was happy to be back after much time away. He was also happy for the Warrior Dash, and happy for the 17/18 fireman (not to mention onlookers) who helped put out the fire on RV “Laverne.” Maureen was happy for the glorious weather. Norm was happy about club members with boats (himself included) making various trips in waters near and far. Think he threw in some happy bucks for Randy too, but I didn’t quite catch it all. (Apologies.) Greg was happy for summer vacations in Tofino and Sun River, and for his and Kim’s 17th wedding anniversary. (Congratulations!) Max was happy to face a downed tree—blocking his road home--with a fellow driver who had JUST purchased a chainsaw. Max is also officially retired, but working 100% of the time. Not so happy about that. Tim C. was happy to see so many he hasn’t seen in a while, happy to see three Richardson/Bowman’s at the same table, and happy for Greg’s 17th Anniversary. Jake threw in happy bucks to purchase additional air time for Dan, whose happy bucks ran a little long. Laurie was happy to see Greg T. and Dan, and happy to be headed out on vacation. Tim V. made a donation to the Rotary Foundation, partly in honor of his birthday. (I’m sorry I didn’t catch the $ amount, though I know there were three digits.) Mel was happy for one great granddaughter and a great great granddaughter, visiting from Phoenix. Gary was happy for a trip to Utah, and that his primary goal in going there was not accomplished. He was sad the audio/visual component of his program might not work.

Gary was fined for the possibility that his program a/v wouldn’t work. Chuck was fined for referring to Bills Model A as a Model T (when in fact Rick mixed it up as well). Poker players were fined for contributing to the delinquency of A-Rod. Mariner fans were fined if they didn’t know the length of the current winning streak. Anyone who hasn’t “Stopped to smell the roses” recently was fined, and a few shared their stories of doing exactly that. Anyone married who hasn’t recently thanked their spouse for all they do around the house was fined. Anyone who’s made a “pocket call” recently was fined. Anyone wearing a Hawaiian shirt, Hawaiian skirt, or shorts was fined. Dan was fined for claiming he did the Warrior Dash, when perhaps it was just a bad dream.
Banners. Stan assembled our most exotic banners, cleverly arranged by how their languages are related. One of your better ones, Stan.
Program
Gary--who admitted he holds a Masters in Education, with a focus on Instructional Technology--couldn’t master the a/v technology of his program. Instead, he shared thoughts about several issues related to Rotary and our club in particular. These included attracting new members, younger members, more ethnically diverse members and female members. He reminded us that “we’re all going to die” and therefore need to replenish the ranks of Rotarians. Thanks, Gary. He also talked about ways we might enhance our inductions, mentorship and retention of new members.
