Greeter: Maureen welcomed all to the meeting.
Called to Order: President Laurie called the meeting to order at 12:30 and led us in the pledge.
Invocation: Maureen delivered the invocation.
Returning: Gary T., (Utah). Rome, (AZ where he enjoyed a “dry heat” of 110 degrees) and Mel returned from Blaine when Gary returned from Utah.)
Visiting Rotarians: Jeanne (Mexico)
Guests: Tim V. was once again accompanied by his lovely and loving wife, Pati.
Birthdays/Anniversaries: Nancy T. (b-day) & Sept. 1st, Rome will celebrate 27 yrs. as a Rotarian!
Announcements: President Laurie regretfully announced Nancy Tieman’s resignation due to work obligations. On a happier note, President Laurie shared thank-you notes from BTC for a scholarship donation, a thank you from Katherine Harrison, (scholarship recipient), and Doug and Susie Landsem (our program last week on the Blaine Pavilion.) Laurie also announced the “Future Vision Training that will take place on Sept. 15. Sept. 20th, we will have a visit by DG Sean Hogan. Sept. 29th is RLI in Mt. Vernon with a reminder that the board will pay for anyone who wants to go to the first session. (There will be RLI training on Nov. 17th in Canada.) Rocky reported on the good time had Golfun with Ken, Tim V. and Sylvia making a powerful foursome. The Music festival in MT. Vernon is Fri. Sept 7th. Laurie has more information on how to receive Paul Harris points for this event. Rollo announced we must use a K as his middle initial in his email address. Tim C. advised him to change this.
Happy Bucks: The Duck Derby was the main event to be acknowledged. Maureen, Dan, Derek, Tim C., Gary T., Ken, Tim V., Sharon, Rocky, Scott, Rollo, Julie, and Sharon were all happy to have attended. Maureen also had $ as she was accepted to a program in Spain to speak English to people just learning the language. Dan was happy his family is returning from an Idaho vacation and that football season is starting. Tim C. was happy for a hole in one, bringing his total, including this one, to one! Gary T. was $5 happy for Derek’s participation in the Duck Derby. Declaring it was so good to see younger members getting involved. Gary acknowledged that Derek is consistently becoming a great Rotarian, and all members agree! Ken announced the next Duck Derby will be August 24th 2013 so put it on your calendars! He also had happy $ for being able to watch Jeanne and Laurie collect ducks and Dan’s physique was also worth some money. He was happy that the band was the best crowd control idea and that since security was not needed, Scott and Greg T. could just sit around drinking beer. Bill G. had sad $ for missing the Derby, but happy for a family visit. He will be at the next Derby! Tim V. was happy that he and Pati were able to have Margaritas at Jalapeños with the Band. Also, happy for the good time at Golfun. Sharon was additionally happy that she remembered to wear her Rotary pin today. Rome had Sorry Bucks for missing the Derby, but $5 for WTA, which has very much impressed him since he became wheelchair bound. Rollo was happy for his wife’s 50th birthday and stated the Duck Derby was a ruse that helped make her party a surprise. (They since have called a “truce” on surprise parties.) Julie was amused to see Max up to his neck in water after declaring he had worn his “wading shoes”. Julie was also grateful that Max had made a $1,000 donation to the cause. (Thank you, Max!) Dale was happy for his 24th wedding anniversary on Mon. This reminded Sharon to kick in for her 1st Wedding anniversary. Laurie was unhappy for last night’s baseball game.
Finemaster: Marlene began by fining anyone who did not have 2 or more assignments at today’s meeting. Sharon begged for a fine by not announcing her 1st wedding anniversary! Anyone from Lynden was fined for mistaking an orange house cat for a cougar. Tim V. and Norm were both fined for writing emails describing Dan Parson’s shirtless physique causing Marlene to experience vicarious traumatization. Dan, of course, was fined for taking his shirt off. Scott was fined for selling himself a winning ticket. Ken was fined as it appeared to be a rigged event, since Marlene won nothing despite selling and buying many tickets. County workers were fined for the parking fiasco that is being created for the Lummi Island Ferry Dry Dock. (Although Marlene may profit from the wine being offered for parking at her office.) People were fined for missing the Duck Derby if they missed for any other reason than attending a wedding. Gary was fined for his absence last week. (This was Laurie’s idea, too.) Derek was fined for trying to bring class to the joint by wearing a suit and tie. Julie was fined for trusting Tim V. with turning in money. Rome, Tyler, & Dan were fined for their extended absences. Any with beards were fined! Rollo was fined for being last in. Golfun people were fined because only the males got identified in the foursome picture. (We know who you are Sylvia, but still!) Ken was also fined for his statement, “The ophthalmologist can see things more clearly.” And finally, anyone without their Rotary pin. (Good move, Sharon.)
Banners: Stan did a great job with the theme: “New Orleans again”. Stan also had an admonishment to stop building cities in flood plains, which of course, makes perfect sense!
Program: Our own Norm V. did the program today recapping the Duck Derby as well as describing the mission to make it grow into a WCNR signature event. Good program!
