President Sharon called the meeting to Order at 12:30.

There were no Guests.

Returning Rotarians included Tim and Pati from a SoCal trip.  Dale was back from the Oregon Coast.  Laurie was home after a family reunion in Kelso and Ken had a little bike trip around the country,        11, 700 miles to all reach all four corners of the US.

Birthdays included Sharon’s on August 28^th.

Announcements:  The Gateway facility is hosting the Lummi Youth Academy Benefit and Variety Show on Saturday.

Duck Race:  Be at the Park by 10am and stay to help clean the ducks following the race.  Ducks will be dumped at 11:30 with results announced close to 12:30.  Come prepared to catch ducks and have fun.  All hands on deck says the captain.

Happy Bucks:  Bill Grace was happy he rain and the duck race activities.  Rollo was $3 happy that his daughter got another college scholarship and his wife got her first royalty check for her published book. Ken was glad to see our new member Brian, the good attendance today and his completion of the motorcycle trip around the country.  Brian had $5 sad bucks that he was going to miss the Duck race because of his son’s wedding.  Rocky was $5 happy just in general.  Marlene was glad about her recent visit with grandchildren.  Linda had $5 to remember the passing of her father 10 years ago.  Sharon had 5 absent minded dollars for not realizing her birthday is tomorrow. Tim was $5 happy about their recent trip to see relatives.  Stan was $5 happy about all his recent family activities include his and Margaret's anniversary and her birthday.  Jake was happy that his daughter caught a 40 lbs salmon, bigger than any fish Jake ever caught.  Jim was $5 happy that his attendance is 100% since the club move to the Gateway Center.

Fine Master:  Rocky strode to the podium like he meant business and a way he went.  Jim Blaney was dogged for being the last person in the door.  Jake was fined for not being the last person in the door.  Bill Grace was fined for his consumption of beer at last week’s meeting that caused him to use the ladies bathroom instead of the men’s.  New member Brian was fined for not knowing exactly that Tim’s beverage of choice is Irish Death.  Tim was dinged for not knowing the Seahawks current record.  Both Jill and Linda were fined for walking the streets of Ferndale this weekend.  Dale was fined for leaving the board meeting early.  Marlene, Jim and Jake were fined for not making the board meeting.  Rick was fined for his ineffective secretarial training of Tim, but Tim quickly paid that fine.  Rollo was fined for making a U turn after the board meeting.

Banners:  the banners all had an Indian name in the club’s name.

Program:  today’s presentation was New Member Talks

Jill Iwasaki spoke first and gave a very entertaining story of how she and Greg met in Europe.  Apparently since Jill is Canadian, she has the exceptional ability to follow a cold trail and was able to track Greg down after they parted ways earlier in their travels on the continent.  They eventually got married in Hawaii 37 years ago.  They have 34 year old twin boys who were born in Canada on the 4^th of July.  One of their mantras in life is:  Where is our meeting point?  It seems that since she worked so hard to find in Europe, she doesn’t want to lose him again.

Linda Quinn is a Montana kid but moved to Seattle when her dad went to work for Boeing.  She always wanted to be an artist and went to WSU to study Architecture since it sounded like art.  She quickly realized it wasn’t very artsy and switched to education. She started her teaching career in Puyallup in 1974. She became an assistant principle of a Jr. High by the time she was 27.  He is married to Ken Quinn and they have a daughter 32 and a son 28. A career highlight was working for two years in Washington D.C. as an educational advisor to the Clinton administration.  When she returned to Puyallup she became the principle of a new high school.  Upon retiring the first time, she moved to California to start a new career but after 2 years moved back to Washington, completed her Doctorate program and got back into education.  She has been the Superintendant for the Ferndale School District for 7 years.

Brian Lott was born in Birmingham England and quit school in the 10^th grade to help his mom and dad with the family income.  He worked for 3 years as a meat cutter before he joined the British Merchant Navy which he did for 19 years.  After leaving the Navy, Brian went to work for the Cunard Cruise Line where he worked in Hospitality.  At this time, he pursued his college degree in Hospitality through correspondence courses.  A career highlight for him was working for England’s Queen Mother for two years.  He attained the rank of Assistant Purser.  Brian has lived around the world.  He and his first wife lived in Vancouver B.C. then he moved to South Africa to work in the catering business.  He had the pleasure of not only meeting Nelson Mandela but actually catering several events for him.  He met his second wife Brigit and then moved back to Vancouver but while in South Africa, he saw the power of Rotary and joined the Langley Central club upon their return to Canada.  In 2010 they moved to Lummi Island where they spend half the year and the other half in Puerto Vallarta.

A Great Program and it's always fun to know more about our club members.

Drawing:  It was Tim’s lucky day. He won the door prize of a tool box and he won the chance to draw for the jackpot which was close, the Ace of Diamonds but also two Nelson Mandela mementos that Brian contributed.  So as they say on Lummi Island, the Pot Grows.
