Greeter: Alena greeted with enthusiasm.
Called to Order: President Laurie called the meeting to order at 12:30 and led us in the flag salute.
Invocation: Marlene provided the invocation.
Returning Rotarians: Dale returned from the WA coast where he enjoyed abundant sunshine.
Visiting Rotarians: Shannon “Beer Guy” Terrell from B’ham Bay.
Guests: Tom Lallas, Rollo’s guest, (who was standing in for Ray.) Tim V with his lovely and loving wife, Pati.
Announcements: Tim V. did a great impression of Tim C. by beginning his announcement with a mouthful of food. He announced that Rocky will be setting up a Duck Ticket selling event Fri. & Sat. @ Cost Cutter in Blaine. We are encouraged to “put the heat on” in getting these tickets sold before next Thursday. Tim and Ray picked up the ducks and will begin scanning them with the bar codes. At this point, there was a break to welcome Jake to the meeting. Ken announced that August 23 we will be turning in all sold duck tickets, money, and unsold duck tickets. DON’T FORGET!! We are making this our signature event, and any help you can be is appreciated…you do not have to stick with your assigned duty.
Happy Bucks: Laurie gave $34 dollars, (and simultaneously fined anyone who guessed it was her anniversary), for Felix Hernandez’ number and his perfect game (or something like that). Bill gave happy bucks also for the “Ms”. (Guess I should pay attention to baseball!) Also happy for the duck race “test drive.” Tim V. was happy for something to do with allowing batters to the bases. (Again, I promise to start reading the sport page.) He was also happy to have found a couple of “Looneys” and gave happy bucks for Pati as well as the weather. Scott was happy for a boat trip up north where he ran into Pete Ruese and Dwayne Ranke…they supposedly tried to do a make-up, but the situation was not right. Greg I. went to the John Wayne Iron horse Trail and Ken was happy that the Duck Race is approaching as well as the look Julie gave Tim V. for adding Canadian Looneys to the till. Rocky was happy for his mom’s (Fay) successful cataract surgery and now she has (one) better eye than his. Norm gave $ to find out what Fay thought of Rocky’s beard, now that she could see it. He also paid his IOUs, (which really doesn’t count as Happy Bucks). Greg T. was happy for a week with his family at Sun River Oregon and the meteor showers. Rollo was happy that his oral surgery did not hurt like the Dr. had predicted. Derrick was happy for a trip to Omak and a run down Suicide Hill. Jim B. was $5 happy for the privilege of working with Nice Rotarians at the ticket sales. (Although, he did not mention anyone’s name and I am at a loss to guess.) He was also happy for the Military Medal display case Bill Grace made for him. Alena was happy to be attending the graduate school of banking at the U. W. Julie was $10 happy for a trip to see friends in Spokane and also for the wine tasting party with the Bowman-Sexton-Richardson clan. (Editor’s note: VERY FUN event!) Sharon was happy to have met her quota on Duck Tickets. Stan was happy that Bill survived the last attempt to collect ducks on the Nooksack. Bill had “rebuttal bucks” and defended his attempts at duck wrangling. He still remembers the look of “absolute amazement” on Greg Iwasaki’s face during this escapade. Tim V. was happy for King Tut, (I think). Jake was happy that he remembered to put on his badge AND remember that he has an anniversary coming up and it might be a big one because he was married in 1963. (Perhaps the 49th?) However, his anniversary has not arrived yet and he thinks he might forget it when it does. Brian was happy for the program today, (Brad Burdick from MBT) and Felix Hernandez’ perfect game and a correction for Julie: There are no good trips TO Spokane, only good trips OUT! Dale gave $6 (US) to buy out Tim’s looneys as well as money for his daughter’s last soccer game.
Banners: Norm began his finemaster duties with the banners which Greg T. correctly surmised represented the devastating fires between Cashmere and Ellensburg. (Greg explained that while he drove through there the other day, he was in no way responsible.)
Finemaster: Norm fined everyone who doesn’t tell Stan how grateful they are for his work with the banners. They truly are an entertaining and informative part of the meeting. Thank you, Stan! Tim V. was fined for using up Norm’s great Mel fine of last week when Mel wasn’t even there! (Tim V. reports he was just following orders.) Greg I. was fined for not offering to fix the technology last week for Gary. Tim V was for stealing ducks. (Again Tim V. explains that he didn’t steal ducks, he “rustled” ducks.) Marlene was fined for fining Norm a few weeks ago for wanting to take Meg on “vacation” to a beer fest. Norm insists the idea came from Marlene’s own husband, Mark. (Begs the question; Norm, do you really want Mark to be your mentor?) Rocky was fined for the Giant’s drug use. Tom was fined for Riordan license plate frames making Norm’s son think Riordan is a very popular state. Scott was fined for being a Coug while Norm’s wife is going to the U W. Alena was fined $2 because she was here. Jim B. was fined for creating Norm’s recurring nightmare about a plane crash. Laurie was fined because she forgot to ask for “Guests”. Brian had to pay $2 just because. Bill was fined because he is the “go to guy” for any tool or resource. He has been prepared for anything since he invented electricity for Puget Power and Light. Rollo was fined for being back on solid foods and Greg T. for his belief that his newly licensed son has not yet wrecked the car. Sharon was fined for being lead architect on the Granery and she has not turned it into a water park like his son had hoped. Shannon Terrell was fined for going fishing with Randy Carr and texting a one liner about the many fish he caught as opposed to the 30 paragraphs of texts that Ray George sent regarding his wife’s one fish. Julie was fined $2 for looking wonderful…(sounds more chauvinistic in print!) Ken was fined for last week’s write-up in the Northwind for being a “backseat Finemaster” and needing a backseat driver to point out wildlife on the road. Derrick was fined because, as a runner, he is a “Dirty Liar” for saying that it is ok to count one’s post-run weight as official. Evidently, when one re-hydrates the weight comes back! Dale was fined as a Canadian for being enemy #1 in B’ham despite Norm’s approval (and economic knowledge) of Canadian’s shopping at Costco. (Norm however insisted the fine be paid in US dollars!) Brian was fined for taking Norm’s wife, Meg, out to Dirty Dan’s and ordering a great wine for Meg, who instantly told Tim V. about it, who instantly called Sound Beverage, who instantly arranged for a case for Norm to buy. (The power of Rotary!)
Program: Brian introduced Brad Burdick, Executive Director of Mt. Baker Theater. Brad did a great program on the upcoming season and some of the new shows we can expect. He also described some of the educational programs MBT has developed and offered insights as to how shows are chosen and arraigned. MBT has been going strong for 85 years, has annual attendance of 108,000 and over 300 active volunteers. MBT truly is a gem for not only B’ham and Whatcom County, but the state, as well.
