MEETING TO ORDER:  President Greg called the meeting to order at 12:30 and Rick Staeb gave the invocation.

 

VISITING ROTARIANS:   Rick Vander Giessen and Ron Kelley from Mt. Baker Rotary; Graham Harris and Shannon Terrell from Bellingham Bay Rotary; and George Tsakumis from Vancouver Rotary.

 

GUESTS:  Scott Piper introduced his guest speaker Charlie Heggem and his wife Kelli.

 

BIRTHDAYS:  Nancy Harrison, David Engels, Jerry Landcastle, Max Legg and Marlene Sexton celebrate their birthday's this month.  Happy Birthday to all!!

 

RETURNING ROTARIANS:  Laurie Lloyd and family returned from a trip to Lake Ponderie, Idaho.  Marlene Sexton returned from a trip to Californian where it was over 90 degrees every day.  Jerry Landcastle traveled all the way to Syracuse, New York to watch the Washington Huskies beat Syracuse.  Gary Tomsic is back after missing four meetings.  He was in several places including Dallas, Texas and Walla Walla.  Brian is back from fishing with Randy Carr and watching the Mariners win a rare game. 

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  President Greg announced that the September 13th Board Meeting will discuss the future of the Rummage Sale.  He also announced, sadly, that Jim Zervas and Mary Kanikeberg have resigned from the club.  Bill Grace announced that the get well card for Brad Peterson was returned for wrong address so he will send it out again.  Jerry Landcastle announced that Brad is going through Chemo-Therapy and was currently doing well.  Jim McKellar made his weekly pitch about everyone getting out there and talking with potential donors to the Dick Metcalf Memorial Project.  Randy Carr announced an upcoming Fishing Derby with more to follow.

 

HAPPY BUCKS:  Bill Grace was happy Brad Peterson is doing well and he had $40 for his 40th Wedding Anniversary.  Tim Carpenter had $5 for Julie to forgive him for riding his bicycle here and he got cut off by a bus but kudos to Stan for the wonderful banners.  Rich Jacobson for a trip to Syracuse where he saw a Manbatta Concert and he saw a Yankee game.  Tim Villhauer for a Navy Training base in Idaho.  Kathy Vander Giessen for a Dave Mathews concert.  Scott Wallace for Brad Peterson having a speedy recovery.  Dan Parsons gave $100 of his gambling winnings out of pure generosity.  Roger Lehnert for his granddaughter starting Kindergarten.  Bob Bowman had sad bucks for Mel being here? And for the Ferry Boat leaving for three weeks for maintenance but he gets to go on vacation and leave his dogs with Marlene.  Stan Brunner for Mickey? Being a Charter Member of the Club.  Phil Bratt for Matt Hasselback seeing George Bush during his recent stop in Bellevue (I believe he paid $10,000 for the privilege).  And, Marlene for her birthday this month.

 

FINEMASTER:  Roger Lehnert was today's Finemaster.  Dan Parsons was fined for being mad at the guy with the white shirt?  (I have difficulty hearing sometimes)  All Huskies were asked to stand and were fined for not making any comments about Jake Locker and for not rubbing it into the Cougar Fans.  Randy Carr was fined $4 for something.  All Cougar Fans were fined $2 for their poor showing.  Mel Hollinger got here late but was not fined because of his age so Dick Langabeer was asked to pay his fine.  Jim Bliss was fined for not knowing who was winning at their poker games.  And Gary Tomsic was fined for problems at the Border Crossing and not doing anything about it. 

 

BANNERS:  The Banners reflected the three R's to commemorate the kids going back to school this week. 

 

PROGRAM:  Our speaker today was Charlie Heggem, owner of Norka Recreation, LLC.  Charlie is a bicycle racer who has been around the world.  He works at REI and is also a Personal Trainer and Coach.  He promotes recreational opportunities for all people.  He is currently promoting Ride 542 Mt Baker Hill Climb on September 9th starting at Glacier.  This is a 24.5 mile 4,300 foot climb from Glacier to Artist Point.  If anyone wants more information they can go to www.ride542.com  Charlie also teaches bike safety, he's an alpine ski coach and works through Gold's Gym.  For more information about his activities you can go to www.norkarecreation.com
