MEETING TO ORDER: President Ken Richardson called the meeting to order and led of with the pledge of allegiance. Gary Snyder gave the invocation.
VISITING ROTARIANS: Visiting Rotarians were Stowe Talbot from the Bellingham Bay Rotary; Rook Van Helin from the Mt. Baker Rotary and Larry Ziels from Bellingham Rotary.
GUESTS: Stan Brunner introduced his wife Margaret and Tim Carpenter introduced his daughter Jessica.
BIRTHDAYS: Lori Pobuta celebrated her birthday today. Happy Birthday Lori.
RETURNING ROTARIANS: None
ANNOUNCMENTS:Jim McKellar took us back to the reason for the Dick Metcalf Memorial Project, to commemorate a great Rotarian. There are almost 300 pledge cards "out there" and we need to contact those parties and do our best to obtain multiple year pledges. Jim also reminded us that each member of the Whatcom County North Rotary Club needs to contribute something to the campaign. So get your pledge cards in.
Bill Grace is working on getting the Roster updated and reminded everyone to review the roster "hand-out" to make sure their information is correct.
Mel Hollinger forgot what he was going to say and then remembered it had to do with the Traveling Peace Arch, which he helped deliver to the Sunrise Rotary Club. Mel also talked about the need for 100% attendance and stressed doing make-ups if a meeting is missed.
Tim Carpenter talked about the upcoming Golfun Tournament on August 11th. He read the names of the eight members from our club who will be attending and encouraged them to get their $110 entry fee in as soon as possible. The Golfun is at Homestead Golf Course on August 11th beginning at 11:00 a.m.
HAPPY BUCKS: Dan Parsons donated $1,000 to the Dick Metcalf Memorial Project (thank you Dan); Tim Villhauer was $2 happy for a recent trip to Poland; Randy Carr was $4 happy for the crab he ate last night; Brian Finnegan gave $20 in memory of the person who helped get him in business, this person was big in rotary and he recently passed away, Brian was also happy for his recent trip to Alaska; Scott Wallace was $2 happy for a recent fishing trip to River's Inlet; visitor Rook was $2 happy for the Mt. Baker Rotary Club; Mel Hollinger gave $2 in hopes that the Mt. Baker Rotary Club doesn't take 25-years to get a woman in the club because women have been an excellent addition to our club; Stan Brunner gave $5 to disclaim any knowledge of the pictures on display; Jerry Landcastle was $5 happy for dinner with the Sexton's on Lummi Island; Rose Abbaspour was $2 happy for passing the Traveling Peace Arch to the Langley Club; Bill Grace was $5 happy to fix the gear box in his El Camino, getting his house painted and happy his view is back; Roger Lehnert was $5 happy for a "procedure" that corrected his low heart beat and the great help he received in getting him through the ordeal; Bob Bowman was $5 happy for the great dinner he had at Marlene's; Marlene was $2 happy for surviving the Lummi Island community meeting over the ferry issue; Rick Staeb was $5 happy for the Sexton/Bowman dinner; Tim Carpenter was $32 happy for his upcoming retirement, after 32 years of law practice (congratulations Tim on your well-deserved retirement); Max Legg was $5 happy that Moss Adams CPA's gave $2,000 to the Dick Metcalf Memorial Project and Ken Richardson was $2 happy for the great dinner at the Sextons.
FINEMASTER: The Finemaster today was Larry Pollett. Larry called on all IOU's to be paid, Lori Pobuta $3 and Dick Langabeer $5; Stan Brunner was fined $5 for not knowing who put the pictures together; everyone who hasn't yet paid the "club dues" was fined $2; Ken Richardson was fined $5 for the near riot at the community meeting on the Lummi Island ferry rate hike; Rome Sarwas was fined $2 for improper land clearing; Rook (from the Mt. Baker Rotary Club) was fined $2 for their club not having any women; Gary Tomsic, Rose Abbaspour and Mel Hollinger were fined $4, $2 and $2 for something about not resolving a "drive in" (?) issue in Blaine and Roger Lehnert was fined $2 for leaving early.
Banners: The theme, guessed correctly by Gary Tomsic, was about summertime boating.
PROGRAM: The program today was a Club Assembly. President Ken started by excusing all guests. Tim Villhauer then led off with pins for those with perfect attendance this past year, (the list was emailed to everyone just prior to today's meeting).
Ken then passed out the coming year's budget for both the Whatcom North Rotary Club and the Whatcom North Rotary Foundation and went through each one in detail. Anyone who was not at today's meeting and would like a copy please let the editor know and I will email you a copy.
Dick Donahue then finished off the meeting with an update on the upcoming garage sale/auction to be held August 25th and 26th in Ferndale. Eight members have volunteered to let the committee place advertising signs on their barns/buildings or on their business properties. Rick Staeb volunteered to provide a phone number and recording to answer call-in questions. Brian Finnegan asked about putting a link on our website that people can go to for more information about the auction (please provide the information to Dave Engels, the website administrator, and he will get it on the website). Dick has passed out volunteer sign-up sheets and urged everyone to please sign-up and for everyone to enlist the help of all their family and friends because hundreds of volunteers will be need if this is to be a successful event. Deliveries will be accepted beginning Saturday August 19th. Rome Sarwas volunteered (he was actually only asking a question) to tune-up all lawn mowers and other such items that are donated to the auction. The silent/live auction will be held at the Ferndale Boy's and Girl's Club.
Sharon Robinson (at least I think it was Sharon) mentioned the upcoming one-day seminar on grants at the Skagit Casino, urging everyone who can to attend. Our club will reimburse the $35.00 cost for anyone who attends.
President Ken proposed that our drawing at the end of each meeting be changed back to the way it was done four years ago. By unanimous vote the proposed change was approved. From this date forward there will be no weekly winner but whoever draws the Ace of Spades will split the pot. A visitor, Larry Ziels, had the winning ticket but he did not draw the Ace of Spades.
