MEETING TO ORDER: President Ken called the meeting to order at 12:32 and Pete Kremen gave the invocation.
VISITING ROTARIANS: Chuck Tull announced visiting Rotarians: Dewey Dessler from Bellingham Rotary and Stephanie Sadler from Bellingham Bay Rotary.
GUESTS: Larry Pollett introduced his guest, Lori Lowery.
BIRTHDAYS: Warm birthday wishes to Mel Hollinger on June 11 and Jake Smith on June 13.
RETURNING ROTARIANS: Tim Villhauer returned from a trip to Alabama where he played golf while balancing a banjo on his knee.
ANNOUNCMENTS: June 23: Rome let us know that there are still plenty of great seats for the concert and extended a special invitation to faculty and students of our visiting schools. June 28: President Ken reminded us that an evening installation dinner will be held. July 5: no lunch meeting. Tim C encouraged people to sign-up for the rummage sale.
HAPPY BUCKS and FINEMASTER: Deferred to the next meeting to allow adequate time for Youth Service Award celebration. Be ready with your wallet open next week!

PROGRAM: Today we celebrated the 30th Annual Youth Service Awards
Mary Kanikeberg thanked Randy Carr, Sharon Robinson, Paul Cooley and Gary Tomsic who served on the committee. The Rotary Scholarship is funded by Rotary and the following banks: Frontier, WECU, Horizon, Wells Fargo, Peoples, US, Banner and Bank of the Pacific. A $250 check was given to each awardee and will be matched by the bank when opening an account.
The service awards recognize that service and education are the most significant ways to contribute to society. Seven schools were represented (Lynden Christian High School was not present) and awards were based on recognition of community service, educational excellence and overall accomplishments. The high school principal or counselor provided introductions of the students with warm and moving stories. The student, after introducing their accompanying family members, defined "what service means to them."
Andrew Grubb (Blaine High School): Plans to attend college in California and stated everyone has the capability to change the worldâ¿¢starting today.
Josh Honrud (Ferndale High School): Plans to further his studies in medicine and has attained his Eagle Scout. Josh indicated some of his best opportunities to help others have been through the Boy Scouts and youth leadership training. He loves to watch the faces "get it" when teaching. He also mentioned our food was excellent.
Carolyn Bradstock (Lummi High School): Carolyn leads by example with a non-judgmental heart. She tutors children, teaching them to read and loves watching their faces waiting to read the next chapter. She feels it is essential to serve your people.
Angela Cloud (Lynden High School): Angela serves as President of SOCK (Serving Our Community with Kindness). One project this year was preparation of military care packages. She has plans to attend Whatcom Community College next year. Her service work not only helps community people in need, but also provides the opportunity for personal growth of the volunteers as they are exposed to new experiences such as learning more about the needs of those in the military and the homeless.
Tobias Ryan (Meridian High School): Tobias leads by example and attempts to inspire others to make a positive difference. He encourages everyone not just to sit by but to take an action to better the community. Tobias shares uplifting personal experiences to mentor others to do service and has given up several potential college scholarships to go on a mission.
Kathleen Hilgart (Mount Baker High School): Kathleen, a "cheerful giver" is a balanced individual who knows how to give back to the community. She tutored summer schools, supervised dances and coached soccer. She participates in Students against Tobacco and enjoys meeting people through her leadership activities. The one thing that she works for is to see the face light up when you help people. It's "the pay."
Heather Edin (Nooksack Valley High School): Heather participates in Foster Kids Camp, the Model of Excellence Program and musical plays. She's an event planner who helped plan graduation. Heather says you can make a difference one person at a time and told a story about becoming part of a foster child's life for a short time at camp and how that forever touched her life.
