June 5, 2008

MEETING TO ORDER:  President Elect Tim Villhauercalled the meeting to order at 12:17 and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, the flag being placed by the window.  Pete Kremen gave the invocation and prayed for mental health.

VISITING ROTARIANS:  George Tsakumis from the Vancouver Club and Erik Vanderstrom from the Mt Baker Club.

GUESTS:  Paul Cooley once again brought Tyler Cook, Haggen Manager at Meridian.

RETURNING ROTARIANS:   No one claimed to be returning today.

BIRTHDAYS:  Leah Macaleer admitted to being a year older this week.  Mel Hollinger celebrates 92 years and challenges all members to give $5 to the foundation as tribute.

ANNOUNCMENTS: 

(1) President Elect Tim Villhauer announced that Terry Lineaweaver has resigned from the club.

(2)  The annual installation of officers will be held at June 26, 2008 at NOON.  Maybe that would be a good day to wear a tie/skirt.

(3)  There will be no meeting on July 3, 2008.  The Board Meeting for that day is moved to July 10, 2008.

(4)  Bay2Bay is scheduled for August 23 & 24.  Dick, Tim and Larry are the movers and shakers on this project.  Check our website for your committee assignments at www.wcnrotary.org you will need to sign in.  Your Log-in is <first>.<last>.813 and your password is 813 if you have not already signed in and changed your password.

(5)  The Lummi Tribe has made a very generous donation to the Metcalf Fund for the Boys & Girls Club in the amount of $5,000.  Thank Rick Staeb for his letter writing skills in securing this donation.

HAPPY BUCKS:  Bill Grace was happy for a trip to Longview and fuel mileage of 32.9 mpg.  Marlene Sexton is very happy to have her daughter married and a birthday too.  Doug Thomas was happy for the early program.  Paul Cooley was happy to have passed a class in management.  Tony Cubellis was happy for the low pollen count.

FINEMASTER:  Tim Carpenter was unaware that he was today's Finemaster, but took the podium to raise money anyway.  Tim fined himself for being unprepared.  Mel got fined $5 to make a contribution to his foundation.  At this point it was mentioned that the Club and Mel each put up $25,000.  Mark and Marlene were fined $3 and Phil was asked to pay it for them.  Paul was fined $2 for a good advertisement.  George Tsakumis was fined, and I don't know why.  Jim McKellar was fined $2 for assignments and Doug said he would pay.  Doug and Ken were fined for changing tables to join Julie.  Jerry Landcastle was fined for the River Walk.  Jake Smith paid for some reason.  Gary Snyder was fined and so was Jim Bliss.  And, finally, someone paid because they were pleased to see the Scottish Lodge Motel shut down.

Banners:  The theme was 'D' Day.  Thanks Stan Brunner.

PROGRAM:  Dan Parsons introduced University of Washington's new girls basketball coach Fred Applin.  Fred was accompanied by another coach whose name I missed.  Fred just moved here from North Carolina.  He has immersed himself in the U of W culture.  He was very pleased on this air flight here to be upgraded to first class when they found out who he was.  His next team will have seven hold over's from last year and seven new recruits.  Fred is excited about the quality players that he has recruited and looks forward to great Pac 10 action in the coming year.
