NORTHWIND

June 19, 2008

 

MEETING TO ORDER:  President Greg Thulincalled the meeting to order at 12:30 and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Tony Cubellis gave the invocation.

 

VISITING ROTARIANS:  George Tsakumis from the Vancouver Club.

 

GUESTS:  Ray George introduced his guest Ian.

 

RETURNING ROTARIANS:   None. 

 

BIRTHDAYS:  None.

 

ANNOUNCMENTS: 

 

(1) The noon meeting on June 26th will be the new officers and directors' induction ceremony.  Spouses/Significant others/Guests invited.

(2) There will be no meeting on July 3, 2008.  The Board Meeting for that day is moved to July 10, 2008.

(3) President Greg announced a short Boart Meeting immediately following today's meeting.

(4) Bill Grace is passing around a Roster and asks everyone to update their info if necessary and initial off when done so he knows you have looked at it.

(5) Tim Carpenter announced Golf Fun is scheduled for August 22nd so please mark your calendar and let him know if you're interested.  Tim also announced the matching grant will be disbursed immediately so plans are on to schedule a trip to Honduras in the mid September time frame.  Those interested in going need to let him know so arrangements can be made.

 

HAPPY BUCKS:  Bill Grace was not happy with the performance of the Geek Squad and realized he should have gone to Greg Iwasaki in the first place.  Eric Nelson for being left alone when his wife went out of town.  Elizabeth Barnard for taking her first vacation in three years.  Greg Iwasaki gave $30 for thirty wonderful years of marriage.  Randy Carr was happy for Ray George's work on his new boat appropriately named "Dental Floss" - I think he was serious.  Brian Finnegan for Randy Carr and Dan Parsons being at Rotary on the same day.  Dan Baker is not happy about being the only one signed up to cook the meal for Bay2Bay - come on volunteers!  Doug Thomas gave $20 for a recent WSU Golf Tournament and his wife and daughter back from a trip.  He was also happy and appreciative for all the hard work by Tim Carpenter and Dick Donahue on Bay2Bay.  Nancy Tieman is happy to be back from a cold snowy trip to Wyoming.  Tony Cubellis was happy for the low "pollen count". 

 

FINEMASTER:  Doug Thomas was Finemaster today.  His theme is "money money money money" (think Apprentice).  Maureen McCarthy was fined $5 for being on the radio this morning to extol the 38% increase in ridership on WTA and Doug was happy to pay it for her.  Pete Kremen was fined for having an "out of control" councilman who defers to the public to raise taxes.  YOU CAN'T MANAGE THE CITY BY COMMITTEE!  Anyone driving a car that gets more than 20 mpg was fined and those who get more than 30 mpg were fined more.  Anyone who works out of their home was fined.  Dan Parsons was fined for having the Husky "ping pong" coach as speaker and allowing him to berate the "Cougs".  Mariner fans were asked to identify themselves but no hands were raised so no fine was levied.  Anyone who watched the final round of the US Open on a computer was fined as was anyone who didn't root for Tiger or Rocco.  Winton Smith was fined because roofing is doing well in the Northwest where Global Warming has not yet been seen.  Bob Bowman was fined for riding the Ferry thereby not having to pay gas for the trip.  Tim Carpenter was not fined for loosing his train of thought. 

 

Banners:  Greg Iwasaki guessed correctly that the banner's represented the Summer Solstice.  Thanks Stan Brunner.

 

PROGRAM:  Our program today was an update on Bay2Bay, presented by Tim Carpenter and Larry Pollett.  The Bay2Bay Bike Ride is a scenic ride NOT A RACE.  All riders and volunteers will meet around 10:00 on Saturday August 23rd at Village Green in Fairhaven.  Around 100+ cars are expected.  The first leg is 58 miles ending at the Boy's Camp at SilverLake.  The ride itself will have three rest stops each day.  On Saturday night Dan Baker will oversee cooking the evening meal (Dan put out a plea for help - no one has yet volunteered to help him).  We are also looking for 8 to 10 teenage kids to buss tables.  More than one member asked whether the Boys and Girls Club could step up to fill this need.   Sunday will be a repeat of the first day.  TO REGISTER AS A VOLUNTEER (MANY ARE STILL NEEDED) PLEASE GO TO WWW.WCNBAY2BAY.COM OR GO TO OUR WEBSITE AT WWW.WCNROTARY.ORG.  Also, a couple of volunteers are needed to go to other rotary clubs (preferably all of those in our district) to inform them of Bay2Bay and solicit their help and participation.  Finally, everyone is asked to take a pack of Brochures to pass out to prospective "Riders" as well as a couple of Posters to hang prominently at your place of business to advertise the ride.  The Brochure explains everything there is to know about the ride as well as information on the rider and most importantly the Waiver and Release of Liability that each rider will need to sign.  To all members - your help is needed to make this a successful fundraiser!
