May 29, 2008

MEETING TO ORDER:  President Gregcalled the meeting to order at 12:35 and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Pete Kremen gave the invocation and quoted John F. Kennedy.

GUESTS:  Shannon Terrell and Mike Kirkland from the BellinghamBay Club, John Moles from the Bellingham Club.

VISITING ROTARIANS:   Leah Macaleer brought her 3 month old daughter Willa who did not stand to be recognized and said nothing.  Paul Cooley brought Tyler Cook, Haggen manager at Meridian.  Tim Carpenter introduced George Mayo from All Mobile Shredding.

BIRTHDAYS:  President Greg Thulin is a year older.  Shirley Metcalf celebrates likewise.

ANNOUNCMENTS:  (1) President Greg announced that his last board meeting as president is this Thursday at 7:30 A.M., Zervas Group Board Room.  (2)  Tim Carpenter stepped in for Dick Donahue and announced that sign up forms are available at the door.  Dick would like to have a Bay2Bay committee meeting before the next meeting.  (3)  Brian Finnegan reported that we grossed $27,500 and netted about $21,000 at the auction.  Total amount raised for the MetcalfTeenCenter is approximately $170,000 to date, $60,000 left to go.  (4)  Tim Villhauer reminded us that advertising is available in the District book.  The International Rotary Conference will be June 14-15 in Los Angeles.

HAPPY BUCKS:  Winton Smith was $5 happy for working with Scottish Rite Scholarship Foundation that awarded $355,000 this year.  Winton was also happy about an Alaska Cruise.  Julie Johansen was $20 happy for a two week trip to Greece.  Brian Finnegan was happy that he didn't have to canoe the NooksackRiver in the Ski to Sea when it was flooding.  Scott Wallace was happy to see Leah's baby, as were we all (Ahhh, isn't she cute).  Tim Carpenter was happy for a dinner and some good ribs.  Dan Parsons was happy for 4 new, very expensive front teeth and was sad that no one noticed.  Tony Cubellis was happy for Dan's teeth, (at that price they should be Gold Dan!).

FINEMASTER:  Max Legg filled in for missing Finemaster, Randy Carr who was fined in absencia.  Julie and Rome Sarwas were fined for being late.  Julie was fined even more for having too much fun.  Leah was fined $1 for leaving her new baby with Brian while she cruised the buffet.  Dan was fined for having a Husky get together when no one is home. Gary Tomsic was fined for a missing City Council.  Rick Staeb was fined for his Ski to Sea announcing.  George Scott was welcomed back with a fine.  Ray George was fined for advice on raising kids.  Tony Cubellis was fined for short sleeves and sunglasses.  Sharon Robinson was fined for last weeks Northwind, (the pen is mightier than the sword and pay back is sweet Sharon).

Banners:  Tim Carpenter was fined for a wrong answer.  Rick Staeb correctly guessed a boating theme and Maritime week.  Thanks Stan Brunner.

PROGRAM:  Dan Parsons introduced Deputy Mark Jilk, Manager of Whatcom County Search and Rescue.  Mark has been with the Sheriff's Department for 12 years and is one of two Deputies that have the primary responsibility of coordinating 8 various volunteer groups that compose the SAR organization.  There were lots of questions from a very interested group of Rotarians.
