MEETING TO ORDER: Greg Thulin called the meeting to order at 12: 35 and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mel Hollinger gave the invocation.
VISITING ROTARIANS: Jim Bliss introduced the Visitors. From Bellingham we had Bill Elfo. From B'ham Bay we had Phil Gubbins and from Sedro Woolley, Pete Ruese. Out of Town Guests were Bill Kirby (Nevada) and George Tsukamas.
GUESTS: Bob Bowman introduced his youngest brother, Paul Bowman.
BIRTHDAYS: None that anyone would admit to, but Mel is willing to celebrate his now.

ANNOUNCMENTS: Greg Thulin reminded us of the District Conference on May 31st at Harrison Hot Springs. You may register on line (www.district5050.org). Mary Kanikeberg announced the upcoming Youth Service Awards Luncheon on June 7th. She is getting the committee organized and asked for any support. Jim McKellar announced there will be a Metcalf meeting next Thursday (April 26th) after the regular meeting. He reminded us that we are half way to our goal, but lots to do, particularly when we consider the fire last January. Rome Sarwas announced that he needs help from the Club and individuals to meet the underwriting for a concert that is scheduled for June 23rd. The concert benefits the Dick Metcalf Teen Center, but the bank that promised to underwrite it pulled out. It seems they are concerned about 50 year olds rioting to the music of The Roy Orbison Group and the Whalers. Tim Carpenter has RSVP forms for the May 6th "Pure Water for the World" Brunch or you can get a hold of Donna Edquist for tickets. Gary Tomsic had a reminder for those who have not yet paid for their lunches this quarter ($100.) Marlene Sexton announced that the deadline for RYLA applications is upon us. Get any applications in ASAP. Lex Ludtke reminded us that the trailer for the rummage sale storage is at Baker Valley Storage and you can call him if you have any questions.
HAPPY BUCKS: Phil Bratt is happy to be back from a good spring break in Phoenix. Roger Lehnert was happy to have had a good 2 week vacation with his wife and had sad $ for the tragedy at VA tech and for the sadness of his Ferndale H.S. and Horizon M.S. students for the losses of their classmates. Randy Carr was happy that baby Addison slept through the night and even though Brian Finnegan was not there to hear him, he was happy for a recent get-away at Brian's condo. Mary Kanikeberg also had sad $ for VA tech, and then she explained that Roger had neglected to mention his vacation was in Hawaii! Roger will be finemaster next week, so we'll see how he feels about Mary revealing this info. Hilary Baumstarck paid his IOU and when asked by Californians how his wife feels about moving to Anchorage, he becomes nervous as he claims she doesn't know they are moving. Mary Kanikeberg had more "Happy Change" for the impressive Career Fair. Jerry Landcastle had happy $ for a trip last weekend with Sharon on Delta to Cincinnati. He claims he had a good reason to go to Cincinnati for the weekend, but he didn't reveal it. Bob Bowman had $5 happy bucks for Paul Cooley who he claims is his best youngest brother (as opposed to his two younger brothers) and he was happy that his sister-in-law, Fay got to finally meet Mel in Blaine. Bob was also happy that he gets to go to CA next week and leave Marlene to take care of his dog again. Mel gave a Happy Buck for Bob going to California and offered to make it $5 Happy Bucks if Bob stayed there for 5 weeks, and people worry about the 50-year-olds fighting! Paul Cooley had apology bucks for disparaging remarks he made about lawyers. He also told how some Gov't employees felt entitled to park anywhere they wanted at his store, so he gave them parking tickets. (What could go wrong with that plan?) Dan Parsons had $31 for VA tech and paraphrased a JFK quote ("I am a Berliner") which prompted Tim Villhauer to translate the original quote to "I am a donut". Brad Peterson fined himself $5 for having to leave early and Jake Smith gave happy bucks for a good Mariner game last week (thanks to Dick Donahue for the tickets) and he was grateful for the college kids sitting near him that made the game so enjoyable by behaving in such a way that restored his faith in young people. He told of how on the ride home he convinced Rome that they needed Krispy Kreme donuts and as Rome was not sure exactly how to get there it appeared they were ""swerving around"" and a police officer pulled them over. As there was no alcohol involved, they were given directions and arrived at Krispy Kreme in time to see it closed. Probably just as well. See today's program report. Elizabeth Barnard was happy for healthy employees who can take over some of the shifts she has been working enabling her to see the Everett Silvertips play. She also had happy $ for finally finding a girl's bike that is not too "Girly." Bill Elfo had happy $ for a phone call that FINALLY came telling him his niece and nephew, who are both VA tech students, were safe. Hilary had a sad dollar for not telling his wife they were moving to Alaska.
FINEMASTER: Max Legg was the Finemaster and fined Sonic Fans (Dan Parsons). Elizabeth Barnard was fined a dollar for a discount she got on her engagement ring. If you filed taxes you were fined $1 because (theoretically) you will get a refund and if you have a gas efficient car you were fined. Any Red Cross supporters were fined because Mark Everson, an IRS commissioner is now in charge of Red Cross, suggesting that he starts the bleeding, then stops it. Bankers such as Scott Wallace were fined because of Duel Jurisdiction and Nat'l Banks and a belief that Banks won't be hassled by regulators. Jerry Landcastle was fined for being on TV and representing the Ferndale roundabout. Educators (Roger L left, so Mary suggested a double fine for him) were fined for the "WASLpulooza". Patty Latham was fined as her bank caught 4 Credit Card scammers. Maureen McCarthy was fined for getting the B'ham Police Dept. to blow up some art supplies and Mel was fined $1 for his invocation that could pass as a sermon. Rome was fined for the banks pulling out of his fundraiser and it was suggested that he bring back the rubber duck race.

PROGRAM: Misty Parris was our Program Speaker. She is the Cardiac Rehab Manager at St. Joseph's. She did an informative program on Heart Disease which is the #1 killer of men and women in the U.S. (More women than men actually die of cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attack and strokes.) The non-modifiable risks are: Family History, Gender, and Age. The modifiable risks are: Smoking (2-4 times the risk and there are many benefits to quitting), high blood cholesterol (Know your numbers!), high blood pressure, Diabetes (Children are now getting Type 2, Insulin resistant), Obesity, Stress (HUGE factor), Alcohol, and Sedentary Lifestyle. A "Heart Healthy" Lifestyle includes: Exercise, Low Fat Diet, Stop Smoking, Lose Weight, Know you B.P., Glucose and Cholesterol numbers, and take your medications if you are on them.
