MEETING TO ORDER: President Greg Thulin called the meeting to order at 12:35. County Executive Pete Kremen gave the invocation.
VISITING ROTARIANS: Maureen McCarthy announced the sole visiting Rotarian to be our own George Tsakumis from north of the 49th.
GUESTS: George Tsakumis introduced his wife as well as his brother and sister-in-law who are visiting from Greece for four months.
BIRTHDAYS: Paul Cooley celebrates his birthday on Oct 10th. My apology to the other member (whose name I missed) who celebrates their birthday on Oct 9th.
RETURNING ROTARIANS: Bill Grace recently returned from a 40th anniversary trip to Holland with his wife Kris. They returned to Holland where they had lived for the first year of their marriage.
ANNOUNCMENTS: Still looking for fundraising ideas to be turned in before the next board meeting at 7:30 am on Thursday October 11th. A few ideas have been collected so far. The next Foundation Board meeting is also on Thurs October 11th. Looking for members interested in attending the Public Relation and District Seminar. Only 13 have signed up so far. There is one on Oct 13th and one on the 20th in Burlington and somewhere in Canada. Didn't catch which location is on which night but President Greg Thulin has the info if you are interested. Jim McKellar announced this is the last meeting of us "having to put up with him" (his words, not mine). Another $3,200 was received this week which puts us about half way toward our fundraising goal for the Metcalf Memorial Teen Center. Members are still urged to make calls and Jim has recruited a phone committee to contact those members with cards still out. Yeah for caller ID!! Bill Grace still has new rosters available for those members wanting them. Two copies are available for each member.
HAPPY BUCKS: There were a lot of people happy at the meeting so I apologize upfront if I missed anyone. Jack Curnow was happy about Jake and the UW defense "not being that good". Brian Finnegan was happy for a recent trip to Italy where he ate and drank too much. Randy Carr is happy for a recent donation he procured from Ferndale dentist Lynn Voo. Randy is also happy about something to do with the San Diego coach and "the walls of Troy are coming down". Gary Schneider is happy to be driving again and wanted to express his gratitude to everyone who drove him to and from the meetings. Jake Smith is happy about something to do with Pete Carrol's definition of a late hit. Dick Donahue is happy to be 65 and finally catching up with his table mates. Laurie Lloyd is happy for the return of her nephew after serving 18 months in Iraq. Sharon Robinson is happy for all of Jim McKellar's hard work. George Tsakumis is happy for one of his guests first visit to the US (not sure which guest). Bill Grace is happy to be leaving for the annual swap meet in Monroe. Jerry Landcastle is happy to have recently visited with Brad Peterson. Paul Cooley is happy to be able to get back in to his house after a recent episode of getting locked out in his pj's. County Executive Pete Kremen requested George Tsakumis to stand in the presence of his guests so that they could know how much he is appreciated by all of us in our club. Rich Jacobsen is happy for a week of golfing in Phoenix. Dan Baker is happy for a recent donation to the Metcalf Memorial Fund by the Imhof's and also for his sister doing well after her recent breast cancer operation.
FINEMASTER: Scott Wallace was the Finemaster and so the "Wallace Rule" was in effect. Two dollars for members wearing a tie. $1 for any member who ate more than one cookie (that's $1 per cookie). Those who didn't eat a cookie were also fined $1. George Tsakumis was fined $2 for the Canadian dollar doing so well. All skiers were fined $2 for not mentioning the low snow levels. $1 to all Hawks' fans for their recent win. Lynn Seeley was fined $2 for Scott's hand getting tired from all of the scrolling he had to do in order to read Lynn's recent version of the Northwind Newsletter. All CPA's who had not completed their Oct 15th returns were fined $2. Lastly, Ken Richardson was the last person in this afternoon but was not fined.
Banners: Today's banners represented the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik I by the Soviet Union. As always, thanks goes out to Stan.
PROGRAM: Brian Finnegan announced today's speaker, Dr. Jayna Williams, a Bellingham audiologist. Dr. Williams spoke on hearing loss and communication. Some of the many topics that she touched on included, different types of hearing loss, the types of hearing aids available and the process for obtaining one. For those interested, she will also be speaking at a seminar on Nov. 7th at the Chrysalis. One of the topics to be discussed is the recent innovations in the hearing aid industry with Blue Tooth technology.
