NORTHWIND

January 22, 2009

 

 

MEETING TO ORDER: President Tim called the meeting to order at 12:30.     Winton Smith gave the invocation.

 

GUESTS:  Willa Macaleer accompanied her mom.

 

VISITING ROTARIANS: Chuck Tull announced one visitor: George Tsakumis - from Vancouver.

 

RETURNING ROTARIANS:  Pete R. is back from the Southwest, and Leah took a trip to New York City.

 

BIRTHDAYS:  Dan Parsons the 28th.

 

ANNOUNCMENTS:

         

·         Our good friend and fellow Rotarian John Aubert passed away last week. He will be missed by all of his friends here at Whatcom North Rotary.

·         Dave Engels is resigning from the club.  The website duties will be taken over by Rick Staeb.  Sharon Robinson will coordinate the Northwind assignments.  Dave will certainly be missed.

·         An e-mail update from Brad Peterson was also bad news, although Brad is keeping up a positive outlook it sounds like the Bone Marrow transplant did not go as well as they hoped. 

·         The Bowling outing was Tuesday, January 27th, at Park Bowl.  6-8 pm. 

·         Nominations for the Rotary Adventures in Leadership program are needed.  High school students are eligible.  Marlene noted that this looks good on college applications.

·         The slate of board members was announced, and voted in unanimously.

 

 

HAPPY BUCKS:   Many members gave sad bucks in honor of John.   Larry and Jake will be up to their typical antics on the next ski trip.  Tim is glad the election is over.  Pete was glad for his vacation. 

 

FINEMASTER - Max

Max fined lawyers, who somehow are responsible for the bungled Oath of Office taken by President Obama.  Various members with I.O.U.'s were fined - I was busy paying mine, so didn't get the full list.  Jack was wearing an Edward Jones coat.  Max noted that the new treasury secretary apparently used Turbo Tax and had some difficulty with it.  He also gave us some mathematical formulas with the bottom line being that each of the top 5% of tax payers will have to pay $600,000 each for the entire Stimulus" going on.

 

BANNERS:   The banner arrangement was in honor of John Aubert.

 

PROGRAM: Due to scheduling confusion, we did not have a speaker, so we took the opportunity to have a club assembly.  Eric Nelson presented the "Club in a Club" idea, and asked everyone to start thinking of people they know, or just know of, which would make good Rotarians.  Each member is going to be asked to produce 3-5 names.  We will use this program to recruit a whole "class" of members.    Eric can direct you to more information on this topic if you are interested.

 

After Eric's presentation we split up into committees and held committee meetings.
