Fellow Whatcom County North Rotarians, we now have a new website. If you go into our old website address (
www.wcnrotary.org) you will automatically be forwarded to the new site. Check it out. The new site is still a work in process but so far I have been able to transport most of the information contained on the old site. Back issues of the Northwind can be found under Stories. The new website also gives me the ability to email everyone a copy of our weekly Northwind with a click of the mouse so you are officially receiving your first Northwind by email. If you have any comments or suggestions about the new website please forward them to

At 12:35 President Scott Piper called the Meeting to order and led us in the pledge of allegiance.
Out of Towner's: Bruce Brabec, George Tsakumis, Gary Cordrey, Jim Wells, Jim and Jamie Voss, Michael Bradburn, Fred Sexton. Guests of Mel Hollinger; John and Carol Cholouchas, John and Betty Morfitt, Rose and Bill Dyke, Mel's Youngest daughter Darlene Vyzis, Guest of Dick Donahue, his wife Fontene Donahue. Guest of Bill Grace, his wife Chris Grace. Honorary Rotarian Shirley Metcalf.
Birthdays: Brad Peterson, Ken Lamb and Bill Grace. Happy Birthday guys!
Announcements: Again a reminder to check your roster and give Bill Grace any updated info. Sharon Robinson mentioned the upcoming fundraiser The Fun Run. She and Hillary are looking for sponsor, so please contact them if interested or with any questions. Lex Ludtke has mentioned that his mother is not doing as well as they would have hoped with the stem cell transplant, but he says that they are maintaining a positive attitude.
Inductions: Gary Cordrey was inducted as a transferring member from Riverside, CA. Welcome Gary!
Happy Bucks: Past President Larry Pollet was happy for a good game last week and happy to see Char Hart, he was also thankful to Bill Grace for Roster work, happy to see Shirley Metcalf, Scott Wallace was happy to see that we had good attendance. Tony Cubellis had some apologetic birthday bucks (I think I missed it again) and he volunteered $10 for missing the foundation meeting. Bruce Brabec was happy to be back, glad to see Char Hart, Shirley Metcalf and Doug Thomas. Doug was also happy to see the same mugs as everyone else, and happy for the game on Saturday. George Tsakumis was happy to see so many Canadian visitors. Hillary Baumstarck was sad that no one but him showed up for the board meeting because he was the only one who didn't know there was a meeting change. Mel Hollinger was happy for the new member Gary Cordrey. Char is happy for the warm welcome back and this inspires her to make her way back to the club! Ken Richardson is happy for the new and the old (not so young) members.
Fines: Scott Wallace⿦Finemaster. (Note: your editor's self-diagnosed a.d.d. started kicking in right about here, but she will do her best to record with relative accuracy⿦hope it makes sense to you all). Ken Richardson was fined $5 for the Wallace Rule (maximum $5 fine). Pete Kremen was fined for addressing a Christmas card to Marge Laidlaw and Scott Walker (oops). Everyone was fined $1 for not guessing the banner within 2 seconds. Those still wearing a tie were fined $1. Doug Thomas was asked to cover his hefty IOU from last week. Brian was fined for being quoted in the Business Journal. Something about Rick Staeb shaking and the Northwest Computer guy⿦sorry. Norm Rauch was fined $5 for each point on his elk! Doug Thomas and Lex Ludtke were simply fined for being tall.
Program: Mel Hollinger introduced speaker Bruce Brabec who, along with Sharon Robinson, gave a wonderful presentation on the Wilma Hollinger Memorial Micro Lending Project in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Sharon Robinson, Julie Johansen and Mel Hollinger, along with three of Mel's daughters went down to meet Bruce last year to see the activities first hand. There was a wonder slide show (lots of hugs for Mel) of the local women who benefited from the program and their surrounding area. The fund raising grew exponentially⿦initially the club raised funds, which Mel matched, then his daughters donated along with friends and family and then the District and eventually RI matched the funds to create a total of $66,000!!
